Jailbreaking now illegal...

Surely though, what I do with my iPhone is up to me. lol.

I understand the downloading of cracked apps being illegal, but jailbreaking!

They reckon it's against their terms of use or whatever. Personally I agree with you. I paid £170 for the iPhone. I OWN it. I should be able to do what I want? Like you say, pirating software, fair enough, but FFS, all I'm doing on my iPhone is changing the styling and adding a few apps for MMS etc.

I take it now threads about jailbreaking phones will be banned like OSX86 ones are?

(Not that I want to see either banned, but it always stank of double standards to me)

Hmm Illegal means it breaks the Country's Criminal Law - this is a broken agreement thus is a breach of contract if anything.

They just want to have sole control over the device and ensure that whatever the subscribe does they make money on it.. commercialism.

I think the point is that they see it as stealing thus they don't have to pay lawyers to go after each individual but rather that they can just let the tax payer pay for it instead. Any court will tell them to reclaim their own revenue and not to expect the tax payer to do it!

This is ridiculous, Apple are getting pretty crap lately.

I bought the phone and I will do whatever the hell I want with it.

It's a game of cat and mouse if Apple start putting in detection features into iTunes, you can guarantee that there will be a workaround within days. The iPhone Dev Team have said that their current method of pwning the iPhone cannot be patched by Apple with software (probably because it exploits the same method used to recover the phone). I don't think it's in Apple's interest to stop all jailbroken phones working with iTunes.

I'm with the majority here, jailbreaking should be allowed as it's your own hardware. Steve Wozniak fully supports jailbreaking the iPhone, he was on BBC's click stating that it is a good thing and he actually uses a jailbroken phone.

The dmca doesn't apply outside the US so you don't need to panic just yet.

Also, I assume that when people say view bought the iphone they mean bought it as a pay as you go handset, rather than on a contract. If it's on contract, then the TOS probably say you can't modify the software, which is fair enough and you're in breach of your contract if you do. Conversely, even if it is on pay as you go, and you did literally pay for the handset, that still doesn't mean you can expect it to work properly if you modify it to work outside it's approved environment.

I don't intend to renew my iPhone contract and will sell the phone. I love Apple products but I have been disappointed with it and now I will be labeled a criminal for fiddling with my own property. Get stuffed!

If it's under a contract, it's not your property.

Typical Apple tbh, will be a good way to see the iPhone die a miserable death. :)
I'm reasonably happy with mine but Apple's attitude has always been bad and if this leads to comedy failure for them, I'll be happy. [/bitter]
