Hi guys,

I'm currently using the stock fan that came with my cpu (see sig for details) but I'm looking to upgrade the cooler for my cpu. Its the socket 775 connection and I'm looking for something which does the job a bit better than my current fan does. I'm not looking towards water cooled systems, just an improved air solution. Also I'd prefer the cooler to not have the push pin connections.

Thanks

Derek

I've had a wee look at a couple of the arctic cooling freezer series but haven't had enough time to take in the various ones to see which might suit. but my question is a few are the 4 push pin variety but I others like the arctic freezer xtreme cpu cooler I cant see how that will fix over the cpu? Can anyone supply any pics on how its done and how easy it is to fix on?

Edit: re-read your post, did not compute regards rather NOT have push pins :)

Looking at the review here the Artic Freezer extreme can be fitted without re-moving the motherboard and does use a slighty different push - pin.

The Tuniq Tower and the Thermalright ultra require a backplate and get recommended a lot.

Tuniq is a good cooler for 775 socket. About mid range price, not cheap but not high end price, think its about £30 from OCuK. Ive got a Tuniq, it will require you to remove the motherboard to install, but it is screwed in not push pins, and gives a nice tight fit. There are some pics of mine in a thread I posted prob on 2nd or 3rd page of this sub forum.

Thanks, I'll definitely have a look at your post when I get back from the football tonight. The budget aspect of things doesn't bother me as I'm just looking to improve on the cooling I have at the moment.

The Noctua NH-U12P gets my vote. It ranks up there with the TRUE and is a very popular choice. Most of the higher end tower type heat sinks will require you to remove the mobo to fit a backplate into which the HSF is then screwed - this is a much safer fitting when you consider the weight of some of these units! It can also mean a better contact between the CPU IHS and the base of the HSF provided you follow the tightening instructions.

My setup is similar to yours and I idle mid 30's and get no higher than mid 50's under load. And it's pretty quiet too (can't hear it over my case fans) :)

I would also recommend the Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, and it is essential to clean the CPU properly before applying the new HSF - this Arcticlean is fantastic for the job.

True is , allegedly, the BEST.

I run a Tuniq & no complaints except it gets a bit noisy if you run the fan at its fastest. ( I run roughly 1/2 speed which is , for all practical purposes , silent )

The Sunbeam core contact is supposed to be better at cooling than the Tuniq and at its fastest fan speed as quiet as the Tuniq at its 1/2 speed. If true would certainly be on my short list :D

Right I've had a look at a few of the coolers mentioned and now Ive got a few questions.

Thermalright True Black 120 CPU Cooler

By the looks of things there is a compatibility issue with gigabyte mobos that require a separate backplate? Also I would need to buy either one or two fans to go with the cooler?

Tuniq Tower 120-LFB CPU Cooler

Did you require a separate backplate fro5tie as mentioned in one of the replies or did it come boxed with the cooler?

Think the others mentioned, the sunbeam and noctua look straightforward enough with just the fixing to the cpu required since they come with fans etc.

I'm sort of appreciating how big the 1200 case is although I'm sure I read somewhere someone had a tight fit even with the batcave surrounding it all :D

Fro5tie has a similar mobo to mine but his is the ddr2 rather than the ddr3 version.

My motherboard is DDR2/3 actually, it is compatible with both, although I am running 4 DDR2 sticks in it at the moment. I was also worried about it fitting in my case, I did some research and found other people with the same motherboard/case combo, took some measurements myself and realised it would be ok.

It does come with everything you need, the backplate, screws etc are included. The thermal paste with the Tuniq isnt brilliant though, I have just bought some Arctic Silver 5 which I am going to use when I remount in the next few weeks. The Tuniq also comes with a fan controller which is useful, it can be quite loud yes, so take this into consideration, personally it doesnt bother me how loud it is so I always have it on full speed!

Here is my thread if it helps at all.

Good luck with whatever you decide, and remember to post pics when its done!

Xigamatek Red Scorpion + Crossbow.

Managed Q6600 --> 3.43GHz with around 65c tested with IBT and i'm sure Prime will be less :D and it looks really nice as well

Thanks for the replies. While looking at that last one I saw test results on tweaktown for the Noctua NH-C12P and I think thats the one I'm going to go for since its available on OCuk and appears to give the best performance out of all the coolers reviewed.

Once I've got that ordered along with a cable extension to tidy up inside my case a bit more I'll post some pictures here when I'm fitting it all together :D

EDIT : Anyone had any experience with the cooler before?

well the delivery company failed to deliver today as is mentioned on their website, combined with me forgetting i should get free P&P from my forum membership as well. hopefully I'll get my cooler tomorrow along with refunded P&P from a failed delivery, if i wanted to use second class royal mail i would have without having to pay for next day delivery charges

Well here goes.........

The cooler finally arrives. The instructions were pretty clear so went together with only a couple of minor errors (me being dense :p)

A little dusty on the existing fan so think I need to get the old compressed air out next time I pop the case open.

Fan fully fitted.

Did a quick temp reading after fitting and didn't notice too much difference sitting idle from the existing fan. I also ran a quick 2 min stress test and the temps barely got to 40degrees so I'm looking forward to a longer test to see how effective the cooler is.

I think I may turn the cooler round 90 degrees as its a bit tight against one of my ram modules though. apart from that a quick and simple change of cpu cooler.
