After going on about taking my wife to be to Egypt for our honeymoon, I've now decided to go to Mexico after seeing and hearing a lot of good things about the resorts there. They mostly seem to be based in Cancun and after looking at the brochures they all looks fantastic.

Has anyone been to any resorts there and can they give me their opinions of them please?

Thanks

Viks

I stayed in one of the Royal resorts in Cancun, was great :p Right on the beach, decent food and drink and there is a bus which runs into the main nightclub bit which is insanely cheap, like 5p a trip or something :p

They are all much of a muchness I think, but certainly no problems with the one I went to.

They're all within 5 minutes drive of each other, virtually all right on the beach, etc...pick out of a hat :D

'tis an awesome place...say hi to my ex.....:p

Moon Palace - just outside cancun.

Absolute Paradise & we were treated like King and Queen for 2 weeks. And you can use the facilities at any of the other 5 resorts they own in the area.

Would recommend going up the coast a bit.

Been to Playa Car a couple of times and there you have nicer beaches plus the
nice town of Playa De Carmen and the ferry from there to Cozumel for
snorkelling etc.

If you want to nip into Cancun it is only 35/40 min on the bus from Playa De
Carmen.

Some of the trips are really good - its only the flight time that puts me off
going back again.

The only thing that's a bit of a problem with the resorts in my mind are the amount of people staying there. I know i won't really get a private honeymoon in the sense it's just me and my girl for the fortnight, but with these resorts having 500+ room, i worry about the amount of people there.

Are there enough things for me to do there? She is happy to sun bathe for 2 weeks but after two minutes i'll get bored and need to do something.

We were looking at going to the Sensatori resort i believe it was called, then swine flu came along and we decided we would save Mexico for a special holiday

Things to do

Scuba diving (the water is brillant)
Snorkelling (some trips take you into caves under the mangroves)
Great Trips to the Mayan ruins / boat trips etc
Cancun is also good for shopping

If you are going to sit in the sun for a fortnight your wasting your time and
money going here as well as 10.5hrs of hell on a plane.

I have to say that there are other issues with Cancun not mentioned here . . .

At Christmas 2003 I went to Cancun on my own for 2 weeks - needed a break from the divorce of wife 1.0 - I have to say that it was one of the best and relaxing hols I had ever had.

I stayed at the Krystal Hotel, which is right at the top (north) end of the main beach in Cancun - it was great - I spent 2 weeks walking around with no shoes, no money and was totally chilled - the beach was an awesome sight - white sand - loads to do - not too many people - great night-life etc etc

The scuba-diving, hiring a moped, snorkeling, speed skating (I took my own) in amongst the MENTAL traffic on the roads, the flash flooding, the MENTAL Mexican bus drivers LOL, swimming in the sea with the baracuda and sharks was also cool!

The next year I went there again to get married to wife 2.0 and had a great time - the wedding on the beach at the JW Marriott was amazing and the absolute perfect day from start to finish - cost about £600 all in (for the marriage bit).

We had a great time.

HOWEVER in just 12 months I would say that 70% of the beach had dissappeared - in 2003 I walked the whole length of the beach without a care in the world - in 2004 there was no beach and the sand-bags that had been layed in a vain attempt to hold back the rising sea level were MASSIVE - I was shocked.

We ended up going further afield to some of the islands and other amusements which was a hassle on certain days - instead of getting up and walking out on to beautiful white sand there was nothing!

BUT we did have a brilliant time - I would love to go back there some day.

But edit: Do beware of the american white trash though :/
Yeah we encountered some of them, nearly got into a scrap with one lot and another lot decided to walk off with one of our towels "because their kids needed one"

We did get in a scrap with a few of them, who started to attack my gf - they were quickly thrown out the club, bunch of tarts:rolleyes:

The other thing with Cancun is all the building that's going on - everywhere. Nice beaches 30min drive from the centre though, ie away from the tourists.

The hotel I posted up there is a half hour taxi ride from proper down town Cancun and so not built up at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

Just come back this morning, El Dorado Royale Casita in River Maya about 30 minutes away from Cancun.

We loved it so much, we going back next week, come home this morning sorted work out and going back out next monday for another week. Not cheap to stay there but the hotel is something else. Its all-inclusive gourmet food. It's voted one the best hotel resorts in the world for the 4th year running.

Recommend going to to http://www.cocobongo.com.mx/home.php?Lenguaje=en - amazing nightclub.

On a much smaller scale though, with friendly people, awesome drinks/food, beautiful places nearby for day trips too.

You could say the same about Ibiza, apparently the North(?) is beautiful and quiet.;)

That is more likely to be due to either it being a man made beach in the first place (more likely than you imagine, a lot of the ones in spain are this) or due to building work further down the coast.

Off to Mexico in October! Staying at the Excellence Playa Mujeres which from everything I've read is one of the best AI's in the Cancun area so hopefully it shouldn't be too bad :)

It's virtually the only hotel to the north of cancun (about 20 mins to the north, with only it's sister non-AI hotel next door). The seawater isn't as crystal clear as it is in Cancun, but there's miles of untouched wide sandy beaches.

This is my second trip to Cancun. First was back in 2003 when I stayed at the Grand Palladium Colonial Resort. That was pretty good - although I understand it's about 3 times bigger then when I stayed there now!
