Resorts in Cancun

Isn't Cancun the Ibiza and magaluf for Americans?

Basically yes it is. We went to the Moon Palace resort and although we had a great time it was really like that. The main strip is a bit like Blackpool if that is your thing though. ;)

If you go all inclusive, expect to spend a lot on tips as well - the staff rely on that because of the American influence there. If you don't tip when they bring the first drinks over you probably won't get served again.

We only tipped like a dollar or 50 pesos a time, which split between a few of us meant we didnt spend that much because we took it in turns.
The holiday reps said that that was enough money. :)

Moon Palace - just outside cancun.

Absolute Paradise & we were treated like King and Queen for 2 weeks. And you can use the facilities at any of the other 5 resorts they own in the area.

how far away are each of the resorts roughly?

Were they all packed with other holiday makers or were they quiet?

Re: the beaches and building work, don't forget Cancun gets dispatched pretty regularly by hurricanes passing through which wear the beaches and knacker the various resorts, so it seems like a continual process of getting knocked down, building again, getting knocked down again :p

Thanks for the link but it doesn't seem to have any bookings for mid/late July 2010 sadly for me :(

How is the food etc there? Do you know if there is any difference between booking online at Thomsons or going to the Travel Agent?

We did ours via the travel agent, the food is bloody brilliant, there are 6 different restaurants, all serving a different themed food, and we didn't get bored during the fortnight we were there. You could also order room service.

We only left the resort to go on trips, we went swimming with the dolphins (which cost about £100 each but was worth it - organised that when we got there, the rep sorted it out) we went to Cancun shopping (which was good, but we didnt really want anywhere built up and busy - which it was) and we went to Chichen itza which really is a must do if you are going to Mexico, amazing place.

We went the last 2 weeks in July, it was fairly busy but not completely hectic, would definitely go there again if we could afford it.

If you want a quiet romantic honeymoon an all inclusive resort hotel in Cancun really probably isn't the best option, allthough a lot will depend on what time of year you plan on going. Personally if your wedding is next summer I'd look to go to somwehere like Thailand as it's the off season and much quieter you could have a lovely week in an Island Paradise like Ko Phi Phi in relative piece and mix it up with a few days in Bangkok or one of the livlier islands

Just come back this morning, El Dorado Royale Casita in River Maya about 30 minutes away from Cancun.

This one, stayed there last July, and some friends of ours just came back from their honeymoon there.

Fantastic place and despite being pretty big it feels pretty quiet. Absolute luxury from start to finish. If you go Thomas Cook get the premium flight upgrade absolutely worth it.

We loved it so much, we going back next week, come home this morning sorted work out and going back out next monday for another week. Not cheap to stay there but the hotel is something else. Its all-inclusive gourmet food. It's voted one the best hotel resorts in the world for the 4th year running.

Recommend going to to http://www.cocobongo.com.mx/home.php?Lenguaje=en - amazing nightclub.

sounds great i'm looking for somewhere to go with wife and 4 year old in feb next year. Thought about florida but mexico might be nice. I usually HATE hotel buffets so avoid all inclusive resorts like the plague since you are usually forced to paying for meals you'll never eat but gourmey buffet sounds nice what do you mean by gourmet as one man's gourmet will be another's scotch egg.

Pah :( already not available for my time in Feb. But there are others for 3600 euros not a bad price. I could get the Eurostar over is there a train between euston and gatwick?

The exact same holiday with jetair belgium costs 2400€ per person so 7200 for me wife and kid!!!! :O

Adults only unfortunately, they do have a sister hotel though that allows kids called the Azul I think, it's not cheap though as we want to go back and have the whole experience again but can't go to the same hotel.

It's not really gourmet buffet as such. There's a buffet in some restaurants for breakfast and I think one night they had one in the mexican fusion restaurant when I was there, rest of the time it's a menu set up and you order what ever you want off it (and as much as you want).

Things I had there were: lobster bisque, carpaccio of beef with truffle oil, scallops on cactus leaf, sashimi, sushi, mahi mahi in a sesame seed crust with a sweet and sour sauce (this was on room service). It's way above the usual food standards at some AI resorts. They also do more 'normal' foods like burgers and pizzas during the day if you want it too.

Sounds like my kind of place.

I wanted to do mexico this year but was scared stiff with the swine flu outbreak. Take it things are back to normal there and it's gone away?

We were thinking of Thailand as our second option, but we've happily settled with Mexico. I think if we do want a day to ourselves then we can ask the concierge there for some quiet places where we can go, or some excursions to go on.

Has anyone has any issues security wise, or any other horror stories. On Trip Advisor and there are a few awful reviews for some of the resorts, but the Excellent reviews far outweigh them

You'll love it.

Just tried to see if I could book the sensatori for next year just for an idea of price but keeps saying nothing available, boo.

We booked ours like before Christmas. It hadnt even been finished being built then, so we just had digital images to go by. I guess now its opened and they can show it in all its glory things have gotten pretty booked up. Its worth a trip there if you can get in. Sounds pretty similar to the one you stayed at. :)
