Hey guys,

Went out looking to buy a black Focus ST3 and came back wanting a green RS. The dealer had an RS in ultimate green parked pride of place in the showroom and I just couldnt take my eyes off it!

I should know better - in my late thirties and Im looking at a bright green car many a teenage boy racer lusts after. I missed the hot hatch period in my youth as I never had the money for a 205 1.9 GTi, XR3i or Astra turbo, it must be catching up on me now.

As Im needing something that has at least some sense of practicality with a sizeable boot it rules out the likes of the 370Z, Audi TT etc.

Test drove an ST3 which was great, and went for a spin with the dealer in the RS, which is a diffrerent kind of beast completely, what a spine-tingling rush of noise! Seats were far comfier in the ST3 though, those pared to the bone Recaros in the RS transfer every road bump through yer arse!

So Im thinking, **** it, you only live once (perhaps not too much longer), it'll be a great car to drive if I can live with the noise... and that green (although far more discreet the blue just doesnt do the design justice IMO).

I love the look of the new RS and have always been a Ford fan, but there is no way I would consider spending £25-30k on a Ford Focus. There are plenty of alternatively available at that price point that will be just as quick and a far better place to be.

White is the only colour for one of those. Might as well get a Suby or Evo if you want a midlife crisis ASBO-mobile though.

Midlife crisis - perhaps that's what it is, cheers mate! ;)

I think the RS has a superb combination of driving experience, practicality and almost reasonable running costs (checked out the servicing costs which seem OK). Like the Evo but its running costs are diabolical.

Yep I'd be even keener had the price been set at 25K, yet im looking at 27.5k for new with the lux pack1. What alternative new cars do you see at that price point for an equivalent offering of performance, looks, running costs and practicality (ie split rear seats and a decent sized boot).

id either go for black or white to be honest, more subtle and better sell on value...

just an idea you looked at the VW Scirocco R? think its in the same price bracket and its one dam beautiful car :)

No I would not, because I think they look awful, far too busy, too much tat stuck on it. I think the ST is a much better looking car. The engine is the RS though is certainly quite special, especially considering it's in a compact hatchback. You could do a lot better for £25k I think.

What would you consider an alternative mate, meeting the criteria mentioned in the thread? The ST is definately more subtle and discreet, and I know you can get the Mountune upgrade taking it to 260bhp that keeps the warranty, but then that aint too far off the price of an RS which has the quaife differential, and of course, the more aggresive looks, which I like.

It would have been interesting if Ford sold it in black too, but nope, only White, Green and Blue.

For £25k you could buy yourself a year old Vauxhall VXR8 ...that has a big boot, back doors and a 6.2 litre V8 engine, it's more spacious, more comfortable and more 'fun' (subjective I guess) than the Focus in my opinion, and it's a lot faster in a straight line. and makes a noise that could actually scare mere mortals :D

Or you could go upmarket a bit and buy something a few years older such as a BMW E92 335i Coupe, etc.
