Singapore Grand Prix 2011, Marina Bay Street Circuit - Race 14/19

In 2008 Singapore had the honour of hosting the first night-time event in Formula One history. The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix proved a huge hit, staged on a new street circuit, with the city's famous skyline providing a truly spectacular backdrop.

The race was announced in May 2007 following the agreement of a five-year deal between Formula One Management CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Singapore entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, and the Singapore Tourism Board.

It instantly established itself as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races on the calendar. The timing of the event also means it can be broadcast at a convenient time for European television audiences as well as thrilling local fans.

Using public roads around the Marina Bay area, the circuit utilises powerful lighting systems to replicate daylight conditions and the most stringent safety protocols ensure driver and spectator safety.

Grandstand seating and hospitality areas lining the track can accommodate more than 80,000 spectators, while a permanent pit area with deluxe paddock facilities is located adjacent to the Singapore Flyer complex.

The event is more than just a motor race. "We envision it to be a national festival, and one that presents many opportunities for participation for everyone, both visitors and Singaporeans alike," said Singapore's Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran.

Epic fails: The kerbs

:D Great stuff Duke !

This weekend is going to be all the more special considering :

1) It's a Formula 1 weekend anyway \o/
2) F1 2011 is out so some Sebastian Vettel stylee time trialling around Singapore will be a blast!
3) The season could be wrapped up this weekend ... will be so interesting to see how the race unfolds
4) DRS at Singapore for the first time ... should liven things up a bit, I'm guessing 5-6 with activation at 4.

Can't wait :)

Hmmm, thinking that DRS detection will be around turn 18, with activation on the main start/finish straight. Though more interesting would be to have detection around turn 22, but the activation not until just after Turn 5

Excellent, cheers Duke.

I do like Singapore. I think they layout is bad for racing, but the atmosphere and the look is great. I also really enjoy driving it on the F1 games.

Wether forceast looks epic!

Any rumours on where/how many DRS zones? I'm going to assume it will be between turns 5 and 7?

Always thought the cars look great under the lights :)

Two things to note.. the practice and qually times are not the same as the European races, so don't miss them and also F1 2011 game is out this week so go buy it

It is such a nice circuit to drive on I agree... the balance of throttle and braking is awesome.

And  at the weather idd!

It has the rewarding factor like Monaco of getting it wrong means your in a wall. You feel a sense of achievement if you complete a hard race without crashing.

Pretty much the best of the recent additions to F1, always look forward to watching the racing here as it looks good under lights and the track really rewards bravery and driving on the edge... :)

If the weather does end up as bad as those forecasts imply, we won't be seeing any racing, they'll all run back to the pits crying and it'll be called off on safety grounds, especially somewhere like Singapore with no gigantic runoffs :p

Nice one Duke. I'm going to miss it only back home Saturday, then 6-6 shift Sunday with another week in hotels. Just hope it has decent wifi so I can catch it on Iplayer.
