Anyone out there tried the new G3258 on a H81 motherboard?

Seeing reports that Asus, Asrock and MSI (I think) had managed to make their boards clockable.

Anyone any experience?

Would like to know this too. In half a mind to get one to have a mess about with in a secondary rig. OTH maybe would I be better served spending the money upgrading from a Xeon E3 1220(around Core i5 2400 or Core i5 2500 level) to a Core i7 3770 for my primary rig??

Interested in this also. I think I heard that MSI arent allowing unlocking the multiplier now on their low end boards.

Or just grab a Xeon 1230V2? (i7 3770 non-K spec) you can get them used for sub £100 these days.

I think that would depend on the stability of the overclock as I think you can only overclock using the ratio. I dont think you have voltage control, but I maybe wrong - I dont have a board to test.

What about a H97? They allow overclocking on K chips!

I have a gigabyte h81m-h and it has all the multiplier and voltage settings, it obviously doesnt work on my G3220 dont know about the G3258. But the options are there

Good to know, thanks :)

I have been tempted to get one of these G3258's to see if it would work in the wifes Gigabyte B85M-D3H. It has a full set of overclocking options and clocks my 4670K to 4.4Ghz with ease. Maybe when they start popping up on the MM.

One sold the other day for £40 and its only £43 on offer and I'm sure you'll get free P&P ;)

I have heard rumors that Intel might release an update to stop overclocking on motherboards like the H81, H97 etc.
I did find this quote though.

"ASUS does not guarantee that Intel new Pentium processor and Core K Series ('Haswell' and 'Haswell Refresh') processors will be overclockable on ASUS H97, H87, B85 and H81 Series motherboards in the event that Intel issues software and firmware updates that result in function changes."

Good to know, thanks :)

If it goes in a jiffy bag I get free postage. If it comes via courier I have to pay for postage. I lost free shipping from all three places I used to get it with when they all switched to DPD. I can wait until they come down considerably in the MM. I wouldn't pay more than £30 for one. It's only for a quick play and would then be sold on again.

This was supposed to have happened last year yet the wifes B85 board with a bios from the end of Jan this year still clocks my 4670K.

That was just a quick overclock by setting the multiplier to 44x, sync all cores and vcore 1.265v. It would most likely gone further than that but I just wanted to see if it worked. The board has a full range of clocking options just like a Z87 board and seeing as I only paid £48 for it when it was on offer elsewhere is a damn good buy.

One thing I will say though, Gigabyte has now removed the F9 bios and the only one's available are F12 and F13 which provide DC and G3258 support. F13 is supposed to increase performance on K series cpu's. I do have F9 saved on a hdd just in case.

Going Z97 would be the obvious choice to ensure overclocking but there is no way I would ever go for the cheapest board available (especially MSI as every board I have ever had of their has failed). That's where the problem arises though and makes a mockery of getting a overclockable cpu for only £44 when the motherboard costs a great deal more. In the G3258 thread people are using boards that cost 2-3x what the cpu cost and that defeats the object. Intel screwed up on this by only officially allowing clocking on Z series boards.
