G3258 on H81

Very nice. Now that's more like it. Have you posted in here? Most of the people in there are using boards that cost 2-4x the price of the cpu!!

Will get it posted :)

That superb news. :)

Did you have to do a BIOS update?

Yes - This board was running a G3220 prior so the BIOS update was not a problem for me - I suppose until these boards ship with the new BIOS it might be a problem for users who go and by a brand spanker CPU and Mobo and dont have an older CPU to do the flash.

I managed to get 4.7Ghz out of my G3258 on a Asus H81M-plus mobo. I was surprised and opens up a world where you don't need to spend £100 on a mobo to clock a £45 chip which would kind of make it naff.

I read this: http://www.ukgamingcomputers.co.uk/overclocking-pentium-g3258-on-h81-b75-h87-h97-chipsets-a-60.html before I made the jump as I wasn't too sure if it would even be possible!

Errm I would say that is considered a OCUK Competitor and would get rid of the link if I were you. ;)

Sounds good, I have a bit of DDR3 spare and getting a mad little 2 core system would be mint if I costs around £100. :D

Would like to know this too. In half a mind to get one to have a mess about with in a secondary rig. OTH maybe would I be better served spending the money upgrading from a Xeon E3 1220(around Core i5 2400 or Core i5 2500 level) to a Core i7 3770 for my primary rig??

Expect your wrong, the xeon is essentially a locked i7 sandy

I have heard rumors that Intel might release an update to stop overclocking on motherboards like the H81, H97 etc.
I did find this quote though.

"ASUS does not guarantee that Intel new Pentium processor and Core K Series ('Haswell' and 'Haswell Refresh') processors will be overclockable on ASUS H97, H87, B85 and H81 Series motherboards in the event that Intel issues software and firmware updates that result in function changes."

So don't update?!? Simple lol

Not very lol. It will only do 4.2 at 1.2v which is the highest the board goes. It almost managed 4.3 I think with llc it could manage it. So I didn't win the silicone lottery but at least it's better than stock Hey :)

Picking up a 2nd hand Z87 / 97 board is the safest bet to guarantee you have voltage control, my PK doesnt do much over 4ghz stock volts but goes upto 4.7 with 1.3 on a GA-Z97M-D3H, which I got for peanuts.

I do have voltage control on it upto 1.2v so I don't think I would gain much with a z motherboard. After all my cooler isn't great so could only probably go to 1.25v tops. So I think that would be 4.3-4.4.

Should be having a play with mine on my Asrock H81 Pro BTC motherboard tomorrow. One thing I did notice, on Asrock's site, it says the G3258 has been supported since BIOS 1.50, however there is a new 1.80 BIOS posted a few days ago that says "Pentium G3258 supported" so am hoping that this will unlock the overclocking on it.

Heads up, I've just managed to overclock my i5-4670k on a MSI H81M-E33. Only mildly (4.2 GHz), I don't want to push it too hard as it's already got higher TDP than the G3258 and I can't change voltages. But was happy to find that out.
