10.5.3 hows it for you?

Well I'm having all kinds of problems. Skitch crashing when taking a screenshot, Numbers crashing when loading, can't access time machine without a complete lock up. Looks like a complete Time Machine restore for me !

The only thing I have noticed is a perpetual beachball. That is the pointer forgets it should be a pointer and sits with a static beachball.. although the new "pointer" works as normal..

Working fine for me :) (see what I did there!)

I'm tempted to do a complete reinstall (I have everything on TM). I've got numerous old applications installed, at least 2 GCC compiler source trees - with their compiler & libraries installed along with lots of stuff from MacPorts etc as well as the Xcode GCC compiler set installed..
I also have a load of old applications that I've got lying around too.

With it being the effective original install from Tiger then with Leopard 1.5.0+ on top maybe it's time to do just straight Leopard + combi-patch fresh install.

I can then restore email, firefox bookmarks etc after..

Anyone performed a straight Leopard install without just upgrading? I remember there were issues with new installs when Leopard first came out.

Did the upgrade last night from Tiger, took 90 minutes including all the updates to get to 10.5.3 and it's absolutely fine.

Ok.

I was thinking starting at the bare wiped disc:
1. Leopard DVD
2. Nuke MS trials etc
3. 10.5.3 Combo patch
4. iTunes
5. Run update (incase I've missed anything)
6. Xcode 3.0
7. Add firefox, etc etc

Thats pretty much what I did - set a restore point marker and it worked fine... I wonder what the problem is!? :)

Well I didn't have the time to do a clean install so just went for the upgrade. Honestly I haven't noticed any issues so far though I'm going to do another bootable backup this evening just in-case.

Just got my mac yesterday and i'm completely new to them, can someone explain to me how downloads work?

For example, I just downloaded VLC player. When it downloads it seems to mount it as a drive, what i've been doing is dragging the main executable and putting it in /applications and then deleting the downloaded file. Is this the normal procedure or am I missing a trick?

Congrats, you're doing it right :p

I'm in the middle of a full Time Machine backup, fingers crossed I won't need it.

I don't usually sweat an update, but I've got a ton of stuff I can't afford to lose right now ;)

[edit] All seems well :)

My PowerMac "server" is going to be getting a fresh install of Leopard soon, so I'll hold off on its update 'til then.
