£1000 for a TV - 65" LED or OLED 55"?

I went from plasma to plasma and then to Fald.

I had a modern GT50 as my last plasma.

The black levels on the Xf90 when dolby vision kicks in are insane you can't tell its an lcd.

The black bars are black

Same on my Samsung in all fairness, it's the bleed from the middle of the screen that ruins it. Black bars, or a black screen then it's black. But you never got the same bleed on a plasma, and I doubt with OLED. I probably should've went fald really. But I got a good deal.

My next set will be an OLED for sure.

I only just got the xf90 last year so I'll wait 3-4 years by then OLED should be cheap, have sorted all the issues and my Fald set will have served its purpose.

Bleed is an issue on large screen non fald sets.

The main issue I have is in one of my rooms I have a custom built unit which can only accomodate a 43" screen. I'm hoping they make oled or falds of that size in the future.

I bought the LG C9 55 inch before Xmas and it really is a joy to behold. The picture is beautiful. Plays any video file I throw at it through external HD. Browser plays video such as BT Sport and my streaming service. Has apple airplay built in and lots more. 10/10 from me.

So the 55" C9 is probably a better bet by the sounds of it. I think that vs SONY XF90.

I will probably be 4 ish weeks until I bite the bullet so will have to see if the C9 is more or less desirable by then

I would just save more money and wait, if you want a 65" then 55" is just too small and will disappoint regardless of OLED or not.

I'm currently on a 55", a 65" is a nice to have, I don't think a 55 is too small, I sit around 1.9 meters from the screen.

Well sounds like you have convinced yourself then. Your opening post does state you want to upgrade in size from 55" so there must be a reason for that.

I'm not convinced I'm on the fence. I think a 55 is fine at 1.9 meters? I admit a 65" does add some nice size, I may consider a 65" version I think they're around 1499, but it is stretching the budget a bit, perhaps I may save up a little more. I want a TV that's going to be excellent for 3-4 years if I'm honest. I've had a new TV every year for the past 2 years but these are entry level, 49" MU6400 and then a 55" NU7400, the MU6400 was superior in all but black levels compared to the NU7400, but end of the day they're both entry level with mediocre HDR / sometimes unnoticeable HDR.

Yeah, in normal TV viewing its fine. But I pretty much only use my TV for movies, in the dark. And once you notice that bleed, i'd rather take sacrifice of less PQ and 1080 and not have it.

I mean it is quite minor in all fairness, the TV looks stunning on 4k content for the price I paid.

But yeah, I can't wait to go OLED.

I like the look of that remote for the LG C9, it's like a mouse, it's magical how on earth does it work, the OS looks ace too.

Samsung OS looks boring and dull, very slow too.

At 2m I would say 55 inch is fine. That's similar to my bedroom setup. I have the option of pulling my 55 closer as it's on an articulated bracket but I never do.

If you were at 2.5m to 3m then I would have said 65 inch hands down. I just wall mounted a 75 inch q90 last month in a very big home and it looks smaller than my 55 inch. The seating position was like 4m away though. Maybe more.

Which proved to me size isn't everything it's the distance away from the screen that also matters. Ideally they would need a projector for their room size.

I have a B7 Oled and an XF90 both 55" and the Oled blows the XF90 away especially in HDR modes the XF90 suffers from blooming as it only has 49 zones, it's very apparent on Netflix DV content and stretches in to the top and bottom black borders, don't get me wrong it's very good for an LCD however it's no where near as good as an Oled.

Sounds like it's a bit pointeless flogging money on a dead horse then. Will consider the C9 OLED

Perhaps I could get an E7 or B7 or whatever other iteration for lower to fit 65 inch in my budget? But what will the drawbacks against a C9 be?

Also take into account you may have to go through the panel lottery to find one with minimal banding/tinting. I went through 10 C7's before I gave up trying to find one. Such an expensive item should have no flaws on the screen.

If you're planning on getting either of the next gen consoles you'll want a C9 as you'll want HDMI 2.1.

Also the 7 series sets are a lot duller in game mode and don't auto select colour gamut so you end up with over saturated colours, those issues aren't a problem on the C9.

Weren't you overly picky though iirc? :p

But yes, there is a bit of a panel lottery as I had to go through 2 c7 and then settled on an e7 to get one where the vertical banding was not noticeable in "normal/real world" usage outside of the 5% grey test slides, still some signs of vertical banding but as per usual, only visible in the "torture" tests, which only last a second or 2 at most and even then, unless going looking for it, it isn't really all that noticeable, at least to my eyes.

As for the game mode, don't bother with it (on any LG OLED), all game mode does is make sure all the post processing effects are disabled and messes up the colour/gamut, just stick with technicolor and keep all the post processing effects disabled (which they should be anyway) and the input lag will not be any different, at least I can't tell any difference between the presets once they are setup properly.
