106 XSi Project Thread

Its basically the same as an s1 rallye, all the same running gear, just with a few extras such as electric windows, and soundproofing, making it slightly heavier.

Slightly larger 1.4 engine, still makes 94bhp (compared to the other 1.4's in the range which make about 75) and revs to 7000 more torque than the 1.3 though. When teamed with a short ratio gearbox (only ever so slightly longer than s1 rallye box) makes for a pretty enjoyable drive.

Don't feel dissapointed would easily be able to hold its own against a rallye.

If i get it fixed, I will be stripping it out, hopefully get some buckets and a cage in and take it on the track. Need to concentrate on my exams and uni at the moment though.

After messing about with my old car taking the engine out and basically dimantling it, i feel confident enough to give a repair a go myself.

However, i'm going to need a new XSi gearbox, as they are a short ratio box they are pretty rare and sought after, especially in good condition.

I was toying with the idea of an engine conversion later in the year anyway so i've decided to bring that forward and do it sooner rather than later.

Will be taking an engine and gearbox from a 106 gti / citreon saxo vts which is a 1.6 16v. makes about 120bhp as standard, with breathing mods and cams, should easily see around 140. So when stripped should make for a pretty nippy car.

Going to get the engine, change the clutch and timing belt, and then drop it into the XSi. Should be looking at about £500 all in, after its all finished.

I know a lot of people won't understand spending money on a car like this, but i love driving it, and its more of a hobby rather than an investment.

so watch this space will be beginning taking the engine out soon.

I've held off the engine conversion until the summer again now, I need to concentrate on revising for my exams rather than playing with my car :(

However, spent the day getting my gearbox off today its not quite off yet, just need to undo the mount and lower it off, however i can already see there is a small hole in the casing, about 6mm in diameter. not sure why its happened yet, as i can only see it through the flywheel cover plate.

So, going to try and source a replacement, they can be had for around a ton, so fitted by my self shouldn't be too bad really.

Pics to follow tomorrow when i have the box off properly.

Got a nice 27k mile 1.6 16v engine with loom and unlocked single plug ecu. Would be perfect for this ;)

I wonder what you'll think perhaps in years when you do a big upgrade on your car, eg. going from your current 1.4 to a 4l v8 or something similar :D. Good write up.

Can't wait! :D

I'm aiming to go up in small increments anyway, i can't imagine having a hugely powerful car now, as you'd soon get bored of the power, and want more.

I already want more and can't wait to do the engine conversion, with the close ratio gearbox people are getting 0-60 times of around 6.9 which is pretty good.

Yes PLease! is it for sale?

So can you explain what the term means please Lopez? :) As I am now unsure. "Compare and Contrast on and off-cam." Exam question 1. Answer 3 of 5 questions.

To me it means the following. When accelerating in my car, the power increases as the revs do, but when it hits the sweet spot of 4k+ it appears to gain a second wind, and accelerates much harder towards the redline. 4lk+ in my car = on cam.

was it from the saxo project you had, i loved reading that, whatever happened to it?

I don't really have the money to buy an engine yet, but if you can hold on to it until the 27th april i'd surely have it off you, long shot I know.

Yes mate, got bored of it being sat there after my remapped ecu failed. Sold all the modded parts and it just sat on my drive waiting to be put back together and sold but then I realised I could make more money breaking it.

Got a 39k mile cherry red cammed s1 rallye now.

So, spent about two days trying to get this gearbox off and now it finally is.

My home for the past two days.

Its as i expected, the diff has exploded making a pretty large hole in the gearbox casing

Ah well at least i know whats up with it, and i now know how to take a gearbox off :)

Now to try and find a decent second hand one.

I coulda sworn someone with a different name posted something similar last week..

Unlucky with the gearbox :(

Get the engine and box complete from GT3 tbh, straight swap or ballache involved?

Yeh i had a name change :p

Could do a complete engine + gearbox swap. But really i want to keep the close ratio gearbox from the xsi. Then when i put the 16v engine in later in the year, acceleration will be much better than with the longer geared standard gti/vts gearbox. Would love that engine though, just can't afford it at the moment. :(

Thanks, theres four garages so theres normally some room for me. Nice to be able to work on my car indoors, with some light if i want to work at night. Beats doing it outside on my drive in plymouth. :)

Welcome to my world.. aka the farm entrance area :D

Cobled floor (seriously) .. water run off from the dairy area :o

Many a time I've been under my car then suddenly realise my ass is covered in a combo or mud and water...

What sort of ratio difference are we talking here btw?
