1080 to 2080 upgrade?

Going from my 980 Ti to a 1080 Ti made a lot of sense at 1440p/144hz 16:9 but from a 1080 to a 2080 at 60hz it's not as clear. The 2080 will offer a decent boost but the difference won't be staggering. It all depends how long you intend to keep the card.

Can you wait for the prices to come down on the step up program? Or do you have to do it within X months after release?

Paying £553 for a 1080 was a little crazy but that's history now. £227 to go from 1080 to 2080? A lot of people would do it, but if you are able to wait for prices to come down and that get's passed on then you could do it for cheaper.

But you’ve still paid 553 in the first place....so step up is not 227 is it?

Well that's what it will cost today. Its 2080 for a 1080 + £227.

What you paid for the 1080 is now history. Doesn't matter if you paid £300 or £600.

Looks like the stepup program only lasts for 90 days which is rubbish.

Well it does....you can’t discard the cost of the 1080 on any level.

Thanks for all your input. I paid £495 for the 1080, the extra is the costs associated with sending my 1080 back and shipping for the 2080.

I felt the premium for EVGA was worth it for the potential to swap for the new Nvidia cards if they were something special. As it is they're not special and I'm pondering whether it's worth the upgrade. The main benefit being I will get exactly what I paid for my 1080 as credit towards a 2080 (plus shipping).

If I didn't step up then I would likely last as long as possible with the 1080 and upgrade to whatever is out at that point.

As i said above, personally i would pay the difference and upgrade.

You would be moving from 1080 to just over 1080ti performance, plus if it ever arrives, the benefits of dlss and rt and a higher resale value when you eventually decide to upgrade.

But if you are happy with the performance of the 1080 then theres no need to spend the difference just for the sake of it.

Out of interest, have you been given a quote to step up to the 2080 ti?

Not sure I get this logic...a 2080ti can’t even push 1080/60 with RT on...

I would keep the 1080 and miss 2080 series altogether...

This is something you are going to have to decide for yourself. It's going to cost you £285 to upgrade, not £227, you can't just leave out the cost of postage.

It's a hard choice to make. Maybe save the money and put that towards a Gsync monitor.

a higher resale value when you eventually decide to upgrade.?

Well, it's costing £285 + his 1080(He only paid £495 for his 1080) so that makes a bit of a difference.

And, it's the resale value I would be worried about most with the Turing cards. They are already a high price for early adopters. So if he buys now he is paying above the normal price. The early adopter price will drop as stocks increase. Then when the pascal series cards sell out, the price will drop again.

But, I don't think resale value is worth considering as He is planning to keep the card for 5 years.
