10900k or 5900x - Help!

I'm in the same boat. Have been running my 6700k @4.6ghz for years now and itching for an upgrade. I've looked at all the Intel options, but I've made my mind up to give AMD a go with the new release, so I've bought a new mobo, ram, m2 drive and power supply (for if I ever manage to pick up an rtx3080)
Fingers crossed I can pickup a 5900x on release day :o:rolleyes:
I'm in a pretty similiar situation myself, I'm mostly waiting on that 5000 series (leaning 5800X but reviews will steer me).

Intel... not a chance in hell. Heck its hard enough deciding the now with Zen2 but with Zen3...
Blue wont be getting much money from enthusiasts.

Agreed. I still have this feeling they might do a Sandybridge at some point but not until they get their process sorted. That said AMD are not the same company, they don't seem to be resting on their laurels.

I was in OP position after deciding it was time (not so much need as just desire) to upgrade my cpu once I had the 3080.
I could have bought a 9900K or 9700k, updated mobo bios and be done and at less expense.
But I feel fairly confident there will be little in it either way. I haven't had an AMD cpu since the days of the Athlon, and as I was going for a mobo and cpu, I went crazy and decided it needed a nice new case and cooling :o.
Everything else is here or on its way, I just hope I can score my choice of 5000 series cpu come release day

I'm in a similar boat to the OP, and I'm jumping on the 5900x. Old machine killed by lightning, so a complete new build. Gaming.

5900x supports pcie 4 - and as far as I can tell, the CPU will likely be good for at least 3 years full detail, probably 5 will minimal compromise. At that point, the graphics card will be the thing lacking.

Go Intel, you'll be limited to pcie 3. While now that's not a huge compromise, in 3-5 years it'll be on everything.

They only risk I'm taking is that I believe that AMD won't have lied about being at least as good as Intel 10th gen. Likely they will trade blows on a few things... but I believe that they'll be as good. So I've already ordered everything but the CPU.

Because I've been living on the craptop with a spinning rust drive and a 2 core i3. And I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE.

Caps intended.
