10GB vram enough for the 3080? Discuss..

I'd be going AMD if not for my Gsync panel.
Same, and my current screen is good, and little/no backlight bleed so is also good for dark games. I really would rather keep my current monitor, so it's probably a matter of either skipping these cards or waiting for the Ti model. Or buying one anyway and alter settings to suit until something better comes along.
I only game at 1440p, but also by the time I'm spending £700 on a GPU I don't want to hit any vram limitations.... I shouldn't have to at this price point.
It seems like it will in the odd title or so, vram usage only seems to be a bit lower at 1440p than at 4k anyway

I'll be trying a 4k monitor soon but I'll see how i get on with it before deciding if i send it back. Really fairly happy with my current 1440p 24" 165hz screen tbf, 24-27" is my ideal range for having everything in sight for FPS games etc.

Going 4k basically means having to buy every new gen high end card that comes out though, if vram is an issue with the 3080 then settings obviously have to be lowered.

No it does not, especially now that DLSS is rolling out to the majority of new games. DLSS gives close to a generational increase in performance to current cards, so it is more than possible to have a 3090 or 3080Ti and have it last through the next generation before really needing to upgrade again.
3090's are stupid money though. DLSS certainly helps, i guess as long as the card below the top is enough performance wise then it doesn't matter much to me anyway. Hopefully Nvidia will be more generous with the vram next time if possible.

3080 is serving me far better than I expected tbh @ 3440 @144HZ and 4k@60 so unless ray tracing performance jumps significantly, I'll probably skip RDNA 3 and nvidias 40xx cards, certainly won't be upgrading for more vram anyway ;)
Since getting my new 4k screen I've noticed 60fps looks a little choppy, i don't know if it's the screen or the fact I've grown so used to high refresh rates that dropping to around 70fps or lower doesn't look all that smooth now. But then this is my 3rd high refresh screen since 2013, probably just got an eye for it now.
My 3080 handles what i play fine though at this res and with high frame rates mostly, but i hope the next cards are a big leap to drive 144+hz screens.

The 4080 will surely have 16gb vram I'd have thought?

Once you've 'seen'/exerienced high refresh coupled with high FPS AND now with VRR. 70fps with VRR on will make the panel refresh at 70hz, so sticks out a mile. One of the biggest visual upgrades is a high refresh panel.

If you have VRR and your fps is 70 then your refresh rate will be 70 - so will stick out a mile. I take it your previous 2 panels were lower resolution?

With your games and a 4k panel, do you go into gfx options and whack everything up to max or select the ultra option for all?
First 1080p 120hz, second 1440p 165hz, now 4k 144/160hz. I usually leave everything on highest or close to, but yeah I can see how I'd need to lower some settings if wanting more fps. At least at the moment that's really the only option anyway.

I've been working on updating the circle chart, currently on V3.0 @gpuerrilla, as I think it's clear we have three scenarios now not just two and we have some new entries and new members to the discussion.

Scenario
3080 owner/forum user asks for an example where 10gb is not enough:
  • Example provided. (Far Cry 6 4K/Max Settings with HD Texture pack).
  • 3080 owners debate provided example.
  • Provided example validated by tech press, game developer and actual 3080 owners in the discussion and externally.
Once we've reached this stage, one of three things can occur; acceptance, deflection or denial.
  • Acceptance
    • I accept there is a scenario where the 3080 will choke and run out of VRAM before grunt due to:
      • Owners confirm FPS collapses down to single digits/Low FPS.
      • Owners confirm bad frame times/stuttering.
      • Owners confirm the issue is resolved by disabling the HD Texture Pack.
      • Owners confirm the issue is resolved by using FSR.
      • Owners confirm the issue is resolved using 1440P or lower resolutions.
      • Owners confirm the issue is resolved by switching to a GPU with 12GB or higher of video memory.
  • Deflection
    • Owners ignore the asked for and provided example and deflect to something that is not relevant to the ask:
      • I don't play the provided example at the resolution and settings required, so I've not got any issue.
      • I've never experienced an issue at 1080P/1440P, if anything I've possibly got too much VRAM and could make do with 8GB.
      • I use image reconstruction so I'm actually running at 720P/1080P and never seen an issue at this level of fidelity.
      • I just lower image quality settings in things unrelated to the asked for example, based on that I have always run out of grunt before memory.
      • But most users have no issue and Nvidia sold more 3080s than RDAN2.
      • But every other game out there is perfectly fine at 4K maximum settings.
  • Denial
    • I don't believe the Tech Press, 3080 owners or the game developers and here's why:
      • It's a local system issue as the game runs fine for me at 4K maximum settings. However, I only want to show you a two minute video recording. What's that? No, i won't record a long gameplay video from the start of the game for an hour as I know the FPS/frame times will tank before I can safely end the recording.
      • Provided example does not count as game is buggy/poor IMO.
      • Tech press examples not valid for [insert reasons]. Different tech site did not see any issue in their 30 second benchmark run.
      • This does not matter because a different game unrelated to the asked for example can run at 4K max settings and use less than 8GB.
      • I found a user with a 3090/6900 XT who has stuttering, in my expert opinion (as a specialist in this field) it's a game issue and the developers will fix it one day.
The cycle will start over when one or more of the following happens again:
  • A new owner/user enters the discussion to ask for an example where 10GB is not enough. (we all dread this day because the charade starts over again ).
  • There is a new game released that may require more than 10GB of video memory at 4K maximum settings.
  • A owner posts that he has also experienced symptoms related to VRAM saturation with his 3080.
  • Thread settles down, but a user from the acceptance/deflection/denial category posts an inflammatory comment to awaken the thread.
@Perfect_Chaos, please could you append the circle chart to the OP for visibility? :D
And spoil the fun, i mean discussion? :p
