Hi I am looking at maybe upgradeing to a solid state drive 128gb because am thinking anything smaller might be used up quick i would be putting all my typical programs and games onto it, hence reason wanting that size.

Am wondering if all the space is available ie will a 128gb be 128 or less like on normal drives with the boot sectors etc.

I been looking at the 128GB Kingston SSDNow V Solid State Drive 2.5" SSD
series

Any advice would be appreciated thanks

iirc the value kingston ones are not great.

I have just bought an ocz vertex 60gb (that is 60gb formatted which is good) from ocuk on the promo offer. Most manufacturers say their drives are 64gb but I bet they are 60gb formatted.

Not the biggest of drives for a gamer like myself, but such a good price and so fast it is well worth it.

Personally I would go for the same ssd as me, as for the price nothing else comes close.

Would 60gb be enough though because to keep performance and speed id like to install games on the ssd to keep them running at faster speed or would the ssd still improve load times even if they are on a normal hd drive particularly games on steam

Do you mean windows on ssd and games on a normal hard drive? (when the ssd is full).
If so, I would say it would be faster than you are currently, as windows is taken care of by the ssd and the mechanical hard drive would be taking care of the games.

I originally thought a 60gb ssd is a bit small, but as long as you are careful over what you install (eg only install the parts of MS Office, Nero etc that you actually will use, rather than a complete install of all features) then you will be fine.

Even a 120gb ssd is not enough if you just load all all your Steam games. I only have a few, namely orange box, CS and batman, which I am sure on their own would take up nearly 20gb.

Is it still wise to keep 15% of drive space free like on old drives even though ssd s dont need defrags etc ie if useing full drive well most can it affect performance having little free space.

I would think an SSD is ok to fill up. I would always leave some space, say 2-4gb in case windows needs some space for temp files or something.

My rig is in my sig, and even my rig is only mid range (in the view of this forum, it is high end to a non-pc person) it feels like a new pc even though all I have changed is the hard drive.

Am using a i7 920 oc to 3.5 with 6gb of ram so hopeing one of these will make big difference.

How long does your version of windows fully boot with one of these

I have not timed it, but I estimate windows takes about 12 seconds from seeing the windows loading thing until I see the desktop with icons. Bare in mind that my cpu is not a 4ghz i7 though:p

Having a rig as good as yours, an SSD will make an enourmous difference!

Am having mixed decisions i still like idea of 128gb but £280 is expensive am using that as guide as i only just using just over that now. suppose 60gb be plenty of just install most played games on it and rest of 2nd drive.

How long ago was the price drop ie when did you get yours

Thanks again

Bought Fri night just gone, picked up Sat (yesterday).
Good 120gb+ ssd drives are too much £££ for me to justify myself spending on a hard drive.

The price drop was last week iirc and is only on until stocks go. The 64gb ocz vertex is about £30 cheaper than I could find elsewhere.

I am off to bed will check the thread in the morning:)

They are fairly straight forward to fit mate, you will need to buy a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter kit to install it though.

OCZ advertise formatted sizes, where's others seem not to So a 120GB OCZ drive and a 128GB Kingston drive should both have the same amount of space formatted.

Is there much difference between the solid vertex and agility versions, i compared agility ones and just noticed the write speed slightly faster, other than that not sure.

I think the vertex ones are a bit better overall.
Max read and write speeds are a bit of a red herring really as they give no indication of real usage speeds - Kind of like a 1080p tv but the panel quality is pants.

Does anyone no how easy these are to flash upgrade firmware is it anything like flashing bios, i only no flashing bios from years ago and having bad experiences and killing one of me motherboards not taken risk since.

Am guessing and hopeing these are straight forward, also when you upgrade firmware do you lose everything and have to reformat.

Thanks
