Few reviewers have pointed out the 4070 Ti's 12Gb is running out at 4K.

The worst offender so far is Nvidia sponsored Cyber Punk running DLSS3 Frame Generation where vram usage surpasses 12Gb@4K and then passes over to system ram.

As the 4070Ti pricing is where it is, are new gen 12Gb gpus just aimed at @1440p now?

Edit:

Official Game Requirements Exceeding 12Gb Vram:

1. Portal RTX (4K Ultra): https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/portal-rtx-available-december-8/

Witcher 3 and other games @ 3440x1440 = 9-10GB of VRAM, that's with DLSS.

So... no is the answer. 12GB is not enough unless you are playing at lower GFX settings, at which point,w hat's the point in buying a 4K monitor in the first place if you're lowering settings just to cope lol.

doesnt matter cause us plebs dont have dlss 3 on cp2077 only tech review outlets do

Think of the 4070ti as a native 1440p card and 4k with DLSS or FSR enabled, if you want decent frame rates.

Yeah it's plenty for 4K. Worst case scenario you might need to slightly adjust some settings but I've never had to with my 3080ti. Only I've ever had to was testing at 8K and Doom Eternal told me I ran out, adjusted settings and it worked (at terrible frames, was just testing on my 8k tv out of interest)

I was initially going to disagree but I think nVidia somewhat acknowledges this being the case. Looking at their page for the 4070ti, the relative performance chart is based on 1440p results. Switch over to the 4080 and the relative performance chart is at 4k.
Nvidia acknowledging it is a 1440p card but without the price to match ultimately is pretty much pointless for for consumers though :(

The 4070ti isn't really a 4K card for newer games - even if it holds up in 4K now in some contemporary and older games. The problem here really is the 4070ti is realistically a x60 class GPU for the 4000 generation underneath and 12GB is all you need at that level, you are just paying premium money for what is realistically a barely mid-tier GPU for its generation.

12GB is enough for me.

For now

The cards as usual run out of grunt before they do vram 99% of cases.

Like say you want RT on, that means you need DLSS, which now means likely upscaling from 1080p or something which is less demanding of vram.

12GB is for peasants, don't need any facts in here thanks :p

A while ago I learnt that the "memory usage / process" measure in MSI Afterburner is supposed to show the amount of VRAM actually used, rather than the amount allocated that other tools show. It should therefore allow an accurate assesment of how much VRAM is needed. I checked some of the games I had installed at the time, and the two that used the most were:

1) Skyrim, 13.2GB
2) X4, 9.9GB

Of course you can make Skyrim use arbitrary amounts of VRAM by adding more texture mods, and this makes a huge difference to image quality with almost no performance impact... as long as you don't run out of VRAM.

So it looks like the answer is: Probably enough for most games, as long as you stick to stock texture settings. It might not be enough for long.

Yes it's enough. So far I've not seen any evidence to the contrary.

Far Cry 6 Benchmark with optional texture pack installed. Apparently you need 16GB minimum if you want to run it :p

Yep. As I say, it's fine 99.9% of cases. I am sure even one can make 24GB not be enough with Skyrim if they tried. Shall we make a thread asking if 24GB is enough and use it as evidence to say it ain't? Poorpers I tells ya, should be getting 48GB Quadro cards because ya know 24Gb is not enough!

Let's be honest, the question is, in 2023 should Nvidia be putting only 12GB on a £800-£900 graphics card. The answer becomes simple then. But then why stop there? Why not ask should they be using a 192 bit bus? Shouldn't the card spec as it is be priced at £549?

No.. don't do that man, don't give Nvidia the upper hand in the BS machine. Nvidia said the 4070ti is better than a 3090ti and don't try to tell me the 3080ti, 3090 or 3090ti are not 4k cards because they most certainly are and had no issue playing games at 4k on my 3090. The 4070ti is damn expensive enough, don't give Nvidia a pass on this

Don't think he is giving Nvidia a pass on anything.

Nice to see you think the 3080 Ti is a 4K card though. I guess you don't intend to join the 12GB is not enough bandwagon then? :p;)
