Remember that the motherboard will be using a decent amount of power too. My system used 150 W when doing absolutely nothing when it had a i7-920 in it at 3.8 GHz (SpeedStep and C-States all enabled). The X5650 @ 4+ GHz might be a bit lower but not by much I imagine. The Xeon X34x0 CPUs are 4-core versions but also 95 W. The Xeon W3503 and W3505 are 2 core but 130 W TDP. I have no idea if any of these are compatible with any consumer X58 boards though.

was wondering if someone here could help, I know everyone here are after x5650 6core xeons but I wanted to know
if there are low low power 2 core or 4 core xeons that would fit x58 motherboards?

I don't know the platform too well so not sure.

out of curiosity, what is the idle power usage or power usage just surfing/browsing of x5650 CPU? I know these are 95w rep so compared to i920 should be better

appreciate any help .

Power usage of x58 systems is massive when overclocked, even at idle.

well I finally bit and upgraded from my x5670.
I got a good deal on an i7 7700k £180 New (discount from someone I know).
I had been looking at the new ryzen chips as a potential future upgrade but couldn't say no to the i7 at that price.
mobo and ddr4 ram ordered and so have to wait for them to arrive.

unsure whether I will sell my x58 or tidy it up in a new case and keep it. Got unbelievable value out of that system I dont think i will get half as long with this new upgrade.

With your current settings if you set the CPU BCLK to 160 the ram will be running at 1600.

Generally though, you want to have the BCLK at 200 with your FSB:DRAM ratio at 2:8 not 2:10 with 1600Mhz ram. Unless you want to overclock the ram too.

Well, I am definitely starting to wonder if maybe upgrading to a Ryzen 1600 would hold any worthwhile performance gains over my current X5650 setup. I know the X5650 running at 4.4Ghz won't be too far behind the Ryzen at say 4Ghz, but when taking into account the higher memory speed etc it might be in the region of a good 10 fps when coupled with a GTX 980 Ti..

Does anyone have any first hand info to trump my speculation?

I've got an X5650 on the way to update my 7year old X58 build from a i7 930.

I want to get more RAM for it too. Does it matter what speed I get? Considering the overclocking; is 1333 ok or should I try to find a 1600 set?

I'd get at least 1600 MHz, the faster it is the more flexibility you have over the BCLK due to the fixed RAM multipliers. For example, if you go 191x22(-23) like me, then a x10 multiplier would give you 1910 MHz (what I use), and a x8 mutliplier will give you 1528 MHz. If you only had 1333 MHz RAM you'd probably be stuck on x6 = 1146 MHz.

Also don't bother with triple channel, just get two 8 GiB sticks.

Is triple channel really not necessary? That would make it much easier! The board supports upto 24GB which is why I was thinking to get 12 to start with but that'll make it a whole lot easier to get some.

While I'm here; I plan to reuse my Thermalright TRUE to start with. Any recommendation on fans for it? Maybe updating to a AIO at some point.

I'm only doing very light gaming, mainly it's going to be a stream PC for cameras and then become a backup/workstation.

Is there a good GPU paring preferably second hand that is a good match?

Mobo is the Asus P6X58D-E.

I bought two 8GB sticks then another of the same type (triple channel now hard to get hold of)

Two 8GB 1600mhz double channel DDR 3 Hyper X Savage
then one 8GB 1600mhz single module DDR 3 Hyper X Savage

If you want 24 GiB, go for 3 sticks of 8 GiB like hornetstinger above. Otherwise just do 2 sticks 8 GiB. Triple and quad channel memory really makes no difference except in very specific applications, and having 6 sticks makes overclocking harder so going for 6x 4GiB is a bad idea.

Pretty much any GPU will be fine, maybe except 1080 Ti and above.

I use 4x4GB sticks and as said, can't see any difference between running Quad of Triple.

Didn't affect the overclock either.
X58 can't do quad. Depending on your board and what slots you've used, that configuration will either be dual channel or triple channel 12 GiB + single channel 4 GiB.

I've picked up a 5650 and would like to get it under water and push it hard. Could any of you link me to a decent overclocking guide?

Also, what's the realistic PSU requirement if I'm going to push the chip as far as I can?
