Yeah, had a pretty big storm round here early this morning, woke me up and I sleep right through most noise (including the smoke alarm). Carried on for ages, seemed to go away at one point but came back again. Some strikes of fork lightning were a little over one second away and yeah, extremely loud (still can't imagine what thats like if it hits inside the house ). Actually, the sheet lightning is usually the louder though, as it goes between clouds, a higher distance can be covered and both clouds have the opposite charge rather than one (the earth) being neutral. That is usually the thunder that shakes the house, had only a couple of those, but the loudest fork lightning i've ever heard.

The smell after a lightening strike is the smell of ozone. High voltage discharge makes ozone (you can sometimes smell it near heavily used photocopiers). Most people quite like the smell, often termed "fresh air smell", I don't mind it myself. It is good in some ways as it kills airbourne bacteria, for that reason small ionisers are sometimes fitted in public toilets to purify the air.

nothing has ever beaten the storms i had in Rhodes during one of our holidays.... The whole islands holiday makers got evacuated to the main town and there was talk of getting us out of there totally......

any storm i hear/see in this country doesnt come close to that one. (4 days long)

Wow. I can honestly say in 21 years I have never felt thunder make the house rumble Anyone else feeling the awesome power of this mornings storm?

Not this morning as it's not rained at all but the other day the bang was so loud that i almost jumped out my skin and the loft exstension shook :s.

Gone proper moody around here. It's well dark and every now and again you hear a distant rumble like the planet is farting discreetly.

Just been on the news John Cleveland college is flooded and so are some other buildings around these here parts. Folk are being sent home in life boats.

ElRazar. Rain is much worse over here mate as we have concrete everywhere which causes MASSIVE tidle like floods. Your rain just drains away in the jungle surely.

TOO BLOODY RIGHT! Like you said it went away at one point and then returned to finish off the job.

In fact it wasn't as big as the one I experienced in the French Alps, at first the storm was on the other side of the mountains, and when lighting struck you could see the outline of the mountains. Eventually it made its was over to us and didn’t stop! It was ‘bouncing’ off the mountains, we were stuck in the middle of it.

Absolutly hammered it down here for about 2 hours. Got woken up at 8am by our dog clambering onto my bed and diving under the covers. I think its stopped now though unfortunatly .

It's not so bad at the minute here in nuneaton, I work about 5 minutes from Hinckley and 10 minutes from Barwell and the skies are begining to clear slightly. I want a big storm. Apparently before I got to work there was a massive roll of thunder that shook the building I wish I had been here for that. Also hoping for the leccy to be fried, means I can sit and play on my ds
