Rroff, you have stated several times your giving first gen a miss, is there any reason other than the normal not wanting to jump on a new architecture too soon, and often first gen sucks at the new dx version?

How could a thread with the title ";)" turn out to be anything other than a complete waste of server space? Surprised it was created to be honest, especially by a OcUK employee.

Drums up publicity and anticipation. More sales.

Makes sense to me...

2 reasons really

Theres nothing that uses DX11 I'm interested in at the moment or in the immediate future and my current setup is not slow in DX9/10 titles.

The life span of when the current Fermi cards will be "current" is likely to be very short compared to the GPU norm unless other "things" are delayed.

I certainly wouldn't buy one, primarily because my main hobby is cycling, and i'd rather buy another wheelset or something. If I was desperate to upgrade (which I don't have the itch at the moment because I dont game much and what I do pkay the 260 is enough), for £500-£600 I'd much prefer to get a couple of 5850s or something instead, or 470s if they were a good price/performance.

I was close to getting an Eyefinity setup I must admit, then I bought a few bikes instead.

The die hard fan boys who buy it no matter what will convince themselves the CUDA etc etc etc is worth the extra...

More sales? If I was looking to spend some money at OcUK (which I just so happen to be) I'd like to come to a forum and read helpful information and advice to help with overclocking my build. Not 12 year olds talking about sex changes. I'm only registered here a few months (although I did access the board on occasion before registering) but the amount of crap talk allowed on here is shocking, and in my opinion, it reflects badly on the business.

Nvidia have already said the GTX480 will run for around 18 months.

Your still misinterpreting the sound bite... the 400 series will take around 18 months to fully populate products wise, but the current GTX470 and GTX480 cards are likely to be superseded sooner rather than later.

One question for you

You are in the market for a new GPU setup, you seem to like your bang for buck based on your posts (2 GTX 260 in SLI and the constant harping about how they cut through everything), and the 260 SLI don't cut it anymore.

You are faced with a situation where you could buy 2 ATi cards for let's say £300 which will give you a baseline performance of let's say 100. Or you could buy 2 NV cards for £400 with a baseline of let's say 90.

What would you do?

:p

It was never this bad around 2900 time, sure the card got some slating and ATI a bit of a panning, but there was never the same level of hating and personal insults/sniping.

It was a lot worst and after it was launched and was behind the gtx after the hype,it got slated even after improvements with drivers.
I waited until feb for one until i got fed up of waiting and got a 320,it is still classed as a bad card in a lot of peoples eye's because how far behind it was to the gtx and how late it was.
I do think the 480 will be not as bad because it will be a equal or a bit faster then the 5870, but the price worries me if there is not a lot of stock.

The shoe was on the other foot from the 8800 up to 200/48** came out as ati were playing catch up as they never had anything to match the 8800 gtx and gt

I won't be buying ATI - just doesn't work for me personally.

You can't really pigeon hole my buying habits, sure I bought the original BFG MAXCORE GTX260 SLI setup because it was just under £300 and nothing at that price point could match it for performance and it was capable of performance in the same ballpark as the current top end setups that cost over twice as much. But when I had to RMA one of the cards, I wasn't sure how long it would take, so went looking for a card to replace it while it was gone, saw the gigabyte GTX260 SoC - it took my fancy so I spent £300 on a pair of them to replace my current cards. I'll spend what it takes to get what I want, but I won't pay over the odds for marginal performance increases or compromise on what I want to save money.

So does the NDA lift as soon as NV unveil Fermi at PAX or will their Heaven and Dirt2 DX9 results be all we get until sometime after the event?

Thats wrong. Nvidia need 18 months - ish to develop the Fermi replacement. The clock started ticking about three weeks ago. But you already know this

If you are going to wait for a High End Fermi replacement, you have a long wait ahead of you.

If they can build up a supply of 512 SP parts they can launch an Ultra in a few months, maybe less?

IF yields improve... big if.

Can we not have a clue on performance ?

The few leaked benchmarks that have emerged seem to indicate a small (10 to 15%) improvement over the 5870. As always, the difference will vary from game to game. We have nothing concrete though, and there won't be anything until Friday.

Can't say I feel the same. The purchasing staff have always posted similar "teaser" threads about products. What the general masses choose to troll about makes no odds to my view of the business.:)
