MS have posted 3 back to back profit quarters, whether this is 'only recently' is debatable.

Despite still making a 'killing' on the PS2 because of the PS3 Sony has still lost $3b over the last two years nearly knocking off any profit they've made from the whole playstation venture. Sony are still a long way from making profit with the PS3.

Heres some figures for the last 10 FYR, this just relates to the "gaming" side, but read under the numbers for more info.

FY*.........Sony**.....Nintendo.....Microsoft
1998 974,000,000: 629,000,000
1999 1,130,000,000: 645,000,000
2000 730,000,000: 421,000,000
2001 -409,000,000: 726,000,000
2002 623,000,000: 800,000,000: -750,000,000
2003 939,000,000: 560,000,000: -1,191,000,000
2004 650,000,000: 316,000,000: -1,215,000,000
2005 404,000,000: 777,000,000: -485,000,000
2006 75,000,000 : 894,000,000: -1,262,000,000
2007 -1,969,000,000: 1,489,000,000: -1,892,000,000
2008 -1,265,000,000: 2,480,000,000: 426,000,000
2009 51,000,000: 1,026,000,000 :
Totals 1,953,000,000 10,762,000,000 -6,369,000,000

Microsoft – Entertainment and Devices Division (Home and Entertainment) through 4thd Q FY 2008 ended June 30 2008
Sony – Game division through 1st Q FY 2009 ended June 30 2008
Nintendo – Overall through 1st Q FY 2009 ended June 30 2008.

Exchange rate for Yen is from Nintendo's Financial Results Briefings.

* -- it's fiscal year for both Microsoft and Nintendo
** -- it's FY+1 for Sony for comparison reasons

The most pure videogame sector here is Sony's reports.

Entertainment and Devices division includes other sectors like computer games, Zune etc. most of them are considered to be profitable. They also started losing money on Xbox before 2002 as it had to be R&D'ed and produced. Which is more than likely another billion or so.

Nintendo releases overall earnings reports – stake in pokemon + currency investments + some other minor things.

Its all a bit over my head this stuff but, do those figures indicate Microsoft are STILL not in profit for the xbox division? Also, i'm shocked at how little Sony have made in comparison to Nintendo, but i guess the R&D costs of the PS3 will have obliterated any profit from the PS2.

No as a group the games and entertainment division of Microsoft are still in the red by about $6.4 billion, but as a whole Microsoft make much more money than this so the Debt is swallowed by the other divisions. There is no "Xbox" division, as the G & E division is made from Zune, game for windows, xbox360 etc. With Sony in the PS2 and PS1 eras the R&D costs was not accounted for in the Games division but put in the relevant divisions, only With the PS3 has all these costs been made transparent so they cost of developing the PS3 is shown in the games division and not into the other Divs. Nintendo on the other hand always make a profit on all there consoles and have a large share of the Pokemon franchise. Hope that helps out a bit.

Sorry to go off topic.:)

Boring.... who cares about these figures?

I have a Russell Hobbs toaster and it cost about £20. It toasts really well and accepts thick slices of bread as well as muffins and crumpets, but the TTT (Time to toast) is a bit long imo, but this is probably part of it's secret in producing an even browning with sufficient depth of crispiness whilst not burning said bread products.

Also it is satin silver and looks nice :)

Which shows the same trend. And I am shocking at maths, but if anything isn't it a higher % jump between the US and Europe 360?

For the PS3 you have to compare Japan - Europe and for the 360 US - Europe (as that's where each console is made).

PS3 - £187 > £310 (with MGS4) = 65.8% increase

360 - £153 > £189 (with topspin) = 23.5% increase

Not really the 360 has had a major price drop in the EU, but not in the US (yet) as for example the Elite is more expensive than the PS3 in the US. The 360 pro ($350 or £175) are only £25 cheaper than a PS3 in the states where over here they are £100 cheaper. So its down to each region TBH MS needed to drop the price in the EU as it wasnt selling as well as they wished, in the US it was doing fine, so a large price drop was not required.

(all prices are rrp )
