I have painted a radiator and the paint is still as **** as when I put it on, so I would just get the appropriate paint and not worry about it.

Out of curiosity what's the width of the room? We've got about 70cm under the stairs to play with and it seems way too little I hate the wasted space and it seems an obvious place for a small wc.
