1996 Volvo 850 T5

Makes me miss my 850 2.5. Granted it was only a lowly non-turbo, but it made a lovely noise and wafted with the best of them. Was pretty well specced too for its age.

welcome to the volvo club. I've got an 07 v70 T5 and beleive me, you'll love it. One thing I dod notice on the photo's were the front window tints, I'd get them checked and make sure they're legal, don't want plod pulling you over.

According to the seller the fronts are legal, and from inside the car they're noticeably lighter then the rears so I've no cause to doubt him. I do expect to be pulled over a lot though, I get a lot of WTF looks even from the general public!

Aren't these on a 16t turbo? It'll be struggling to get that hp IMHO
Think the Rs run 18t's, hop over to vpcuk those guys know a thing or two :)
From what other people have said, it seems that it's definitely not getting the 350BHP I assumed, but I will dyno it at some point. I believe it's had a new turbo, but am yet to ascertain whether it's a 16t or 18t (it has lots of R parts so could be an 18t). Am going to bring it home for the weekend and sort out a few niggles and will check then :)

You and me both! Had the same model, most comfortable car I've owned, just a shame it had a bit of drinking problem. Had a bit of body roll too but I put towing springs in the back of mine, tidied the handling up nicely. Lift off oversteer in something that big is really quite comical :D

Fun times at North Weald a few years ago

Nice, strangely, after months of looking for a 7 series BMW (e38) I got offered a bargain 99 C70 T5. Had never considered a volvo before but I like it. Arriving next Friday, excited to get on the motor way with it!

How's your 850 getting on, geekman?

We were talking about cars whilst travelling home in my bro's car yesterday, and after talking about getting a cheap car (which I've mentioned on here before) he suggested the 850 T5. From Pistonheads and Autotrader, there's probably about 10 for sale at the moment, under £1k - probably averaging £850 - which seems like quite a good amount of power and barge-like qualities for the money.

There's good tuning potential (which I would probably never explore :p), but for the price, it's either a 220bhp Volvo, or something far more boring and perhaps not even as practical.

Anything break? Anything untoward? Insurance is reasonable for me, only £500 because I'm an older scrote than you. :p

I haven't done a huge amount of miles in it but apart from a dead battery it's been pretty solid. The tyres are getting very low and I'm currently looking for some new ones: thankfully they're not that expensive. Judging by my experience so far I'd definitely recommend it.
I'd be interested to see what the rolling road results were?
To be honest I've been so busy lately it's slipped my mind and I haven't had a chance to get it done. Everyone's been asking me what power it puts out so I really need to find out! Any particular places in Surrey or Kent you'd recommend?

How many miles has yours done? I am looking at an 850 CD T5 (1996), 133k miles and £800. Seems right up my street. :p
That's what mine was. Horrific MPG, I averaged 22 but could get it up to around 27 by being verrrrry sensible on a long run. Comfy as **** though, would love another one if I could justify the running costs. It trooped on to nearly 200k miles before it went to the big scrapyard in the sky :(

The odometer reads 199k but the engine and gearbox have done a lot less (130k apparently). The one you've found sounds like about the right price, athough there are a lot of things that can go wrong so I'd give it a good check over before buying it. After reading on forums about other people's purchases I think I got quite lucky with mine.

The few times I've used the volvo instead of the mazda for work I've averaged 28MPG but when I take it for a proper drive it goes down to about 13...

Lovely cars - one of my mates had one, cue lots of ****-taking about driving a boring old-man's car. Until he gave us a ride in it and the turbo kicked in :D

I've recently changed my bmw for a 02 V70 T5, and all of my mates took the mick saying i'll be wearing a flat cap next, and then I took them out in it, and they changed their minds. Very discreet, and powerful.

Yours looks nice, I decided on a V70 as I wanted to get a newer car than the bmw, so that ruled out an 850, but i've got a soft spot for 850's due to the touring car days.

I remember when the T5-R came out, the dull yellow thing and my dad and I borrowed one and spanked it around the Midlands one morning. Back in it's day it was rapid and sounded lovely but it torque steered like a bitch. They had optional traction control which as far as I can remember turned a small orange light on and nothing else. The test drive was enough for my dad and he bought one to replace his Carlton 24v of the time.

So let me get this right, they insured you on a 225hp group 16 car with heavy mods and you down as the main driver at 18 all for under 1k?

Insurance comapnies wouldn't touch me or gave very high quotes (2k+) on a Honda Prelude VTEC until I was about 24
