£19k from nowhere

Happened to me once, I cashed a cheque for £40 and I ended up with £400 in my account. I thought I was safe til I got a letter about four MONTHS later saying it was a mistake and that they would be removing said cash from my account :( How do they work this stuff out 4 months on??

Goooooood Afternoon Sir

That never fails to get a chuckle :D Good thread, shame about the mysterious disappearance of the OP though :(

Spoke to HSBC on tues and they didn't tell me much except the name of the person who payed in the cheque - unfortunately I did not recognise. Said it looked suspicious - no **** - and their fraud department was investigating it. Gave me their number to contact if I needed more info.

I go food shopping that night and get to the checkout and debit card has apparently been stopped. So am without food. Would have been nice to be informed about this, don't u think???

I rang up today to find out wtf and, despite getting referred by a further 2 people, the fraud department tells me to get lost cos they're "not a customer facing department" - nice. That's when my phone ran out of credit (which I can't top up without my debit card). So now I am completely in the dark and without money. Someone was meant to ring me back today but apparently they did not have time.

HSBC have completely screwed me. Wish I had just done a runner with the cash tbh since they don't seem to value my co-operation at all.

Go into the branch if you can and speak to someone higher up.

19k is going to show up somewhere or another... I expect it will be traced back to where it went.

I suggest perhaps, pulling it out into a savings account, and getting some interest on it but dont spend it. Then if they ask for it back, you still have it!

(No idea what i am talking about, but seems to make sense to me :))

This is probably the most legal way of profiting form it but could still get you in trouble. If you tell the bank they will just remove the cash and earn the interest themselves.

Haha that's awful....... i'm with HSBC and i'll bear this thread in mind if I ever get any random deposits :D

(Please god, let there be some random deposits).

according to bank it was payed in somewhere in london (nowhere near me - im in swansea atm) and whoever deposited it put my name on the paying in slip together with my acct details. how odd 0_o. maybe i have a guardian angel of some sorts

Is your name Pip?

That is awful news and it makes me angry too.

They shouldn't have witheld the funds that were not in question, it's astonishing to think they don't have the capacity to do that in this day and age.

I'd be lucky in the fact that I could walk down to my local branch in 5 minutes and I would give them hell. In fact you should if possible.

Don't be a push over either. Tell them what it's caused you to do and tell them it was unnaceptable to have not told you.

To be fair they're bound to err on the side of caution and put a hold on any accounts suspected of being related to fraud until they've concluded their investigations.

I'm sure if you go into your local branch you will be able to sort something out there and then.

I'd (politely) demand some compensation for the trouble they've caused you, if they value your custom a token payment of £50 or so shouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility.

I suppose they only have to use the 'terrorism act' or 'money laundering' thing now and you are shafted anyway.

There are possibly regulations within the FSA that leads to them making this decision to freeze your account.

That's all well but this person probably needs money to you know, stay alive.
Hopefully he's got some good friends.

You're gonna get framed for something really nasty and then the police check your bank account....."oooh, look, an anonymous payment into his account".....NICKED! :D

On a semi related note. I recently had my card scammed, Barclays Indian call centre wasn't much help, i asked to be put through to the fraud department that had sent me a letter (no contact details on the letter) The guy there was quite helpful, but he was defiantly not customer facing as one of the "security" questions he asked me was what petrol station i had visited 6 months ago!
