£20 for windows 8 upgrade

I think the rationale is that almost everybody qualifies for the upgrade anyway, and system builders can use an OEM version.

Upgrade your current Windows 7 install to Windows 8. Then use your existing Windows 7 disc to dual boot that?

Don't know if that will work and It's a massive hassle but It may be possible :)

Upgrade Win 7 to Win 8. Then get a separate HDD and disconnect all other drives, and do a fresh win 7 install to that new HDD. You could then mess around with the boot menu code. Create a new boot menu option pointing at the new win 7 install drive.

To dual boot, you need to win 8 setup from within the older OS (win 7), which you can't do with the upgrade.

As a student, I think I can even get W8 for free. But why would I?

The metro thing is ridiculous. Right now, I use the Start menu to search, to go to the control panel or to just bring the taskbar up if a game's crashed. But with the metro interface, whenever you press the start key, a whole new screen slides in. Not only is this bound to be a little bit jittery/slow at times, it also obscures everything that you were previously doing.

I really hope they give you an option to use the classic start menu instead of Metro.

You can still Windows Key + search, the Control Panel is there under the right-click options and just press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC for Task Manager.

Might be a stupid question but if I 'updraded' Windows 7 to Windows 8, would I still have a working Windows 7 key? Upgrade suggests to me that your key stops being valid for 7 and becomes valid for 8? I'm not tempted to do it anyway. I have Windows Vista sat in a drawer that I'd possibly pay £20 to upgrade to 8 if they were offering that

Hope they are going to allow clean installs. I've never liked upgrading in the past, makes me feel dirty

Press Win key -> start typing -> searched

Right-click lower left corner -> control panel (I believe that's two clicks - the same as Windows 7)

Metro is designed to run smoothly on tablet hardware (and it does - I've seen it). Unless your desktop is running some 10 year old hardware, I think you won't experience any "jittery" transitions.

The Metro home screen is a quick stop to another application. You spend 5 seconds in there.

edit: sorry, didn't see someone else had posted pretty much the same thing a few posts up.

but it can be used in classic mode. not sure on the benefits of that over standard win7 though.

There are quite a few improvements over Windows 7 apart from the obvious appearance changes. They are all detailed early in one of the Windows 8 thread. They include faster boot times, a better system for backing up files. It is generally faster and smaller that Windows 7 and just as quick to use despite what some people are saying.

Given the price, it would be silly not to benefit from the improvements and, who knows, a useful metro app might turn up :-)

For £20 it's worth a punt I guess.

I'll probably buy it then wait a few months before installing it (or more likely; get the itch and install it within an hour).

Is there a release date yet?
