20 years on from Half-Life...

Not played any Half Life games in many years now, to a point I am starting to forget things. Kept waiting hoping HL3 would be coming out and I would play them before it does to have everything fresh. But looks like that won't be happening for a long time, so might as well play them at some point this year.

My only thought on HL3 is maybe they will make it as a VR game if they are making a VR headset. They seem to want to push the game to the next level each time, so maybe it is VR this time?

The Core looks great. I want to play that. Any idea when it will be out?

Last time I spoke to my brother in law (Urby) he was redoing some levels etc, I've no idea on a release date, I don't think he does either. I think the other lad he's been working on it with is bouncing all over the place doing his filming so his time is limited and my bro in law works full time and has 2 kids.

Excellent documentary, thanks for posting.

Only had my 'gaming' pc 6 months when this come out and was playing the likes of Battlezone, Quake II, Unreal etc. Complete game changer at the time.

Brought back memories hearing about the guys only wanting publications for the CDs on the front of the mags, just to get the latest mods/maps.

Funniest memory for me was my wife going mental (a day later) when my mate told me that the 'big' patch v1.0.0.9 was out at 18mb, I had to download it. He'd kindly burnt it to a cd-rom and posted it to me but I just couldn't wait a day now could I..? (her words)

The old WON days before Steam, wouldn't let you play without it. Took hour and a half to download on dial up. Phone was engaged all that time and her mother couldn't get through... :D

How we take these things for granted nowadays.

going to watch this! thanks for the link.

Loved HL, all of them. I never actually finished opposing force back in the day, so i replayed it last year. It was still loads of fun to play. Black Mesa was good, but i'm waiting until they finish it, then i can play it again with Zen. I dont really get the hate for the Zen levels.

Valve have to finish the HL story, its one of the most beloved games in history, if they dont they dont care about the fans who love it or care about the fans who bought the games and made them who they are today.....which is worse?

I found a video of The Core on youtube, it looks like great fun! And a great video:

I will be keeping an eye out for The Core. Looking forward to it, and a half-life (not HL2) mod! Can't wait.

yeah that's an old vid as well if I remember rightly, they've been tweaking a lot since then. We used to build maps together, he'd love doing custom models etc. Got to be 10 years it's been in the making now. I keep telling him to kickstart it just to pay for some time off work or more help to get it finished.

That reminds me
I STILL have not finished HL2:p
Must go back (again)and have another go:D

I never finished it either. I got to the hovercraft level back in 2004 and developed horrid cold sweats for a few hours and never touched the game again. Had to lie down for hours to recover.

Half Life (and expansions) was great. But I find that HL2 is vastly overrated.
Deus Ex is superior to HL2 and is 4 years older. I put FEAR above HL2 as well, same era.

Fear and deus ex are also good games.... but if i had to choose i would take HL1 and 2 above them.

different strokes and all that.....

I am still waiting for the HL2 VR which was green lit ages ago. i started playing HL2 in VR on my rift DK2 and it was phenomenal. that was without motion control and the graphics update which is promised for the new HL2 VR game. (I just wish valve were making it, it would be out already then (or maybe not after all valve time etc! ;) ) )

Did you get any motion sickness with that? I tried an old VR hack of HL2 ages ago on my Vive and there was some motion sickness. Hopefully it can be fixed. HLVR would be awesome!

Hi
yeah it was tough on the old VR legs! (for me at least). I built up my tolenence starting from 10 mins then stopping, over the course of a few weeks i could play for maybe an hr. i never went beyond that (partly because an oculus software update broke compatibility)

i am hoping with full motion controller support it will be less of a problem.

Seems the other lad working with my brother in law now has access to his PC again and they will be focussing on it this year, hoping to get it wrapped up in the next 12 months.

sorry if i am covering old ground here but just on the off chance you are not aware

would this scratch an itch?

Yes I was waiting for Black Mesa for years and it is a tremendous achievement. Some areas are even better than the original and of course it is all new and shiny and beautiful and the new music is excellent too. Some of the set pieces are fantastic. I was playing it last week and the only problem for me is, it just does not feel like the original e.g. it is much harder in parts, which is more modern, but jarring compared with memories of the original.

It is technically better in parts, and it looks great, but it didn’t feel like half-life and I stopped playing. Masterful achievement though and I will certainly go back to it.

When bigmike first posted it I wrote the same response out, then wondering if it was rose tinted glasses and I hadn't given it enough of a chance. Some parts of the game i didn't recognise but I stopped playing after a few hours as I couldn't get into it. Big shame really.
