2002 Beetle 2.0 anything to worry about?

My mum just bought a 2004 Beetle with the same engine, automatic as well, the MPG will be horrendous, less than 30mpg which is just madness. But oh well. Does much go wrong with these engines?

theres nothing to go wrong with them , the design of that block is older than most posters in motors though , i believe the main changes where making the heads more restricted each time they revised it to improve emissions. hence the poorer mpg and bhp .

Best getting her to check if there any restrictions on the car allowance if she takes it, there's a number of items we have to remain within if we take the allowance relating to age, number of doors etc.

jesus, £3300 for a mk4 golf with the worst engine in a frock :(

don't discount the 1.6 as it makes near as dammit the same performance figures as the 2l and that one linked above is about a grand over priced

don't discount a 1.8T or dare I say it the 1.9tdi (tractor Y0)

there isn't many common issues really although they do like to eat suspension bushes other than that they are pretty bullet proof especially in petrol N/A form

Agree with this. The 2l makes no sense over the 1.6. If you considered the Golf as an alternative you would get a lot more car for your money. Unfortunately the 'cute' requirement will cost you.

Lets not forget that even people who can drive cant tell where the corners are on these, so she WILL hit every post, Porsche and bus queue full of pensioners she drivers near.

1.6 has a pretty naff gearbox that can throw diff pins. bushes are ok. theyll go nearly 100k before feeling bad. i know a guy on original bushes at 170k, its functional but drives like total crap

id try and get a 1.8t. its going to drink like a 2.0 but at least it will go quicker

That one is overpriced. Granted it has low miles but it still doesn't warrant the price - it should be nearer the £2000 mark. Although pricing on these is all over the place.

There was also a slight facelift in 03 - Changes to the interior, a better armrest, side repeaters on the mirrors and the rubbish boot handle was replaced with remote entry.

Keep in mind that body parts etc will be expensive as there are hardly any to be found at breakers and there are also changes to part numbers etc frequently so in many cases your only option will be to go to a VW dealer.

The 1.6 is perfectly adequate as well. Check all the electric bits work.

If you look on the owners club, EVVO, there are often decent ones for sale on there.

Wife went for a test drive and liked it a lot, said it drove like her A3 (surprise surprise).

Going to see a mini and (my choice) a 3 series BMW as well. (no doubt the BMW will lose, but it is the sensible choice imho).

They have none as it is a perk car allowance as opposed to business need, it could almost be regarded as a salary bump for those that don't take the company car or qualify for it. Only restriction is that she has it insured for business use to claim mileage.

Is this the part where he will triumphantly announce it's actually a £9000 3 Series before providing a convoluted reason for the massive budget discrepancy?

Perhaps i'm just jaded by the way these sort of threads seem to go more often than not :p

The max budget is £4k always has been, She wouldn't buy a more sensible Focus, you don't seem to understand the irrational nature of women. If I had my way it would be a focus or a civic or similar, maybe even a Mondeo, she won't even look at those.
