Why not ban wings completely and only allow aerodynamics from the body shell only. There has to be a way to differentiate a wing from the body shell..

Because you're then lowering the class below Formula Ford..

Whats the point of going up through the classes Formula first - Formula Ford - Formula Renault - GP2

When you can get people with the necessary experience in setting up the car correctly in Formula First

Wings are a part of motorsport now - they're in virtually everything.

I'd rather loose all the flipups, winglets and crud from the body - set a maximum downforce level from the wings and reintroduce ground effect.

Will allow them to get much closer and keep some speed up through the corners.

Honda's second team may not get off the ground.

From Autosport.com

Honda's hopes of getting their second Formula One team off the ground appear to be faltering, following the decision this week to not allow teams to run customer cars before 2008, autosport.com has learned.

The Japanese car manufacturer had hoped to be able to run a satellite operation next year with a version of the 2006 BAR008 and customer Honda V8 engines to allow Takuma Sato to continue his F1 career. It was widely believed that the operation would be run by Super Aguri Racing.

However, with the plans coming together at such a late stage, the team needed to be given the green light by rival outfits to run customer parts - an action that is outlawed under the Concorde Agreement.

Although there have been recent moves to free up the possibility of teams running customer cars or parts, autosport.com has learned that approval was not given at the Formula One Commission meeting earlier this week for any relaxing of the current restrictions. This is a major blow to Honda's hopes to run a second team next year.

FIA president Max Mosley told autosport.com that there was no chance of customer cars being allowed in F1 for another two years.

"Not until 2008," he said. "The thing of selling the cars and parts in 2008 is that there is no Concorde Agreement (beyond then) so unless we renew that restriction as part of the Concorde Agreement, that limit has gone.

"But until then, you must have the intellectual property rights to your car, and the parts must not be designed or manufactured by another constructor. They can be (made) by a third party like Lola, but not a constructor. You cannot just buy a car."

That stipulation will almost certainly make it impossible for BAR to help out the new Honda team in time for next year, even though sources claim that the funding had been put in place for the new outfit to run in 2006.

Furthermore, it is too late for the new team to get an independent design and manufacturing process ready before the start of next year, even though Japanese racing car constructor Dome has been linked with the project.

A final decision needs to be taken by November 15, the deadline for new entries for the 2006 Formula One World Championship.

Should the team fail to get sorted by then, it still remains likely that they will try and get off the ground for 2007, because they will have enough time to resolve the manufacturing and design issues, and Dome could still assist as a 'third party' in 2007.

It is also not clear yet what impact the F1 Commission decision will have on Red Bull Racing's plans to supply versions of their RB1 car to the new Squadra Toro Rosso outfit, although the team may be able to proceed as long as the junior outfit builds and manufacturer the car and its parts themselves.

For those of you that think that the above means we've seen the last of Taku, there's some older news (which may have been posted already) - I'll let you decide if it's good or bad news ;)

Autosport.com 20/10
The Midland team's managing director Colin Kolles told this week's Autosport: "Takuma has the contract, so now the ball is in his court. If he wants to sign it, he could be a Midland driver next year. We offered him the contract in Brazil and we are still waiting to hear."

Was posted in the last gp thread I think - although I've heard that he may be making an appearance in A1GP during the off season...

I know about the customer cars bit - thats what F1 used to live off - sadly once Barnie and Max got in charge theystopped that. That really does need to be changed - but by next year? No chance.

Oh god.. not Sato back in the Jordan again.. its bad enough him being in a car which is controllable, but to be in one which will have less grip... :D

Looks like Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon could be on his way to F1. Sure it'll be good to have another Brit but I can't help thinking that there are other folk (who know how to turn right!) who would do better - Anthony Davidson and Allan McNish spring to mind for a start.

From autosport
Indy Racing League Champion and this year's Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon is on his way to Formula One, according to reports coming out of the United States.

The Briton's contract with his Andretti Green Racing team runs out next week (November 1) and there had been speculation for several months that he was pondering a switch to F1.

According to speedtv.com, Wheldon will now sign a deal to become a Formula One test driver on Tuesday. The deal will see him become a third driver next season prior to a race deal for 2007.

Although the identity of the team has not been revealed, Wheldon has been recently linked with Williams, BMW and lately BAR. The latter team is powered by Honda, whom Wheldon has driven for in the IRL.

Speaking to speedtv.com, Wheldon said: "I have not signed a deal with anybody. My agent and I have had conversations with F1 teams, that's no secret."

Asked if he was headed for Williams, Wheldon said: "That's not true. But you're on the right track."

A deal with Williams would give him a firm chance of a race deal in 2007 because Mark Webber's contract with the team runs out at the end of next year, and new signing Nico Rosberg is likely to have options on his deal with the outfit.

However, a chance with BAR makes more sense - especially with Honda believed to be keen to do all they can on the back of Wheldon's success in the United States.

Although there would be no chance of him graduating to the BAR race team in 2007 - with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello both signed for that season - Honda's future plans for a second team would provide the perfect berth for Wheldon.

Honda's ambitions for the team, which will be run by Aguri Suzuki, are unlikely to come off for next year but will almost certainly reach fruition for 2007 - just when Wheldon would be ready for the step up to a race seat.

Wheldon's path to F1 has been eased by his association with his agent Julian Jakobi, who also represents Juan Pablo Montoya and has strong ties with various Formula One teams.

The other possibility for Wheldon is a tie-up with the new BMW team, who have yet to announce their 2006 line-up and will too be eligible for a third driver next season.

Moreover, Jakobi has strong ties with BMW's motorsport director Mario Theissen, and the two have been rumoured to discuss a possible Wheldon deal during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.

Not many seats left for 2006, only one left at Midland and some confirmations to come from BMW, Williams and Torro Rosso.

Christijan Albers will confirm his switch to the Midland team tomorrow, with sources claiming that he has signed a two-year deal with the outfit.

The Dutchman, who raced for Minardi this season, has been in talks with Midland for several weeks and has called a press conference in Holland for Tuesday morning to announce his plans for '2006 and beyond'.

His hopes of staying at Minardi for next year were scuppered when the team were taken over by Red Bull. The energy drinks company have confirmed that there will be no place at the new Squadra Toro Rosso team for Albers, either as a race or test driver.

Although Albers was linked with a third driver role at Williams, his only real chance of remaining as a race driver was with Midland.

The team, who bought Jordan at the start of this year prior to their official entry as Midland next season, have yet to confirm who Albers' teammate will be.

They did announce last week, however, that Nicky Pastorelli would be their third driver next season.

Nice to see Albers with a seat for next year. Definately more deserving that others I could mention.

Got a couple of bits to post later - but just cant be bothered at the moment. Too knackered.

Rumblings in the American press suggest that a joint 'General Motors-Goodyear' formula one assault is possible. The Winston-Salem journal refers to GM executives 'at the highest levels' being approached about the collaboration, even if the publication admitted that the US carmaker is 'not enthusiastic'.

Nevertheless, former F1 supplier Goodyear is understood to be interested in tendering for the 'control tyre' contract in 2007 or 2008, with head of racing Stu Grant believed to have admitted that a bid could be made 'if it made marketing sense'.

Small bit of news... would be much better in my opinion if Goodyear were the control tyre rather than Bridgestone.

Suzuki reveals plans for F1 team

Former F1 star, Aguri Suzuki, has revealed that he hopes to run a team in 2006, with engine supplied by Honda, which recently bought out BAR.

"We have cleared all the hurdles we had to clear up to this point," he told reporters in Tokyo this morning. "Obviously there is a huge amount of work left but we plan to be on the grid in 2006.

"We have the technical cooperation of Honda behind us so we are confident of achieving our dream of competing in Formula One," he added

Suzuki revealed that he has officially notified the FIA of his intention to enter a team, and also confirmed that he has held preliminary talks with Takuma Sato.

We are at a nice stage in talks with Takuma," said Suzuki. "I'd like to see him racing with a good team and he'll want that too. Our goal is to build a team he will want to drive for."

Aguri Suziki - F1 star?? Errr...ok...

Yet another team looking at Sato though

Stoddart hands over the keys

It was a "sad day" for Paul Stoddart as he completed the handover of his Minardi F1 team to new owners Red Bull on Monday.

Stoddart, who has been at the helm of the team for five years, sold Minardi to Austrian energy drink billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz in September with the sale going through on Monday.

"It's all done, they own it. They didn't mess around," he told Reuters.

"It's a very sad day and I really wish there was another solution."

Red Bull have already revealed that they'll be changing the team's name to 'Squadra Toro Rosso'.

"Regrettably the Minardi name will now disappear from the sport," Stoddart added.

"But I firmly believe the competitive spirit that has burned brightly within this team for the past 21 years will live on under its new owners."

Ferrari's V8 Is 200 Horses Down On Power

Ferrari's Felipe Massa is quite pleased with the new V8 engines, even though they are severely down on power. The new V8 currently has 200 less horsepower than last year's V10s but is apparently still extremely quick. Here is what the young Brazilian had to say about his recent run in a V8 powered F2004:

"It's definitely better than I expected. With two cylinders less there's a lot less power, but it's fast anyway. It was fun, I expected worse, but I like it. We'll be able to go fairly fast."

Albers confirmed at Midland

The Midland Group has announced the signing of Christijan Albers as one of its race drivers for the 2006 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Midland will relaunch the team formerly known as Jordan Grand Prix under its own banner on 15 November 2005. Albers will conduct his first test with the team on 7 December 2005 at Jerez, Spain.

Following a successful career in various Championships and a promising rookie season in Formula One with the Minardi F1 Team in 2005, Albers is the first driver to sign a race contract with Midland for 2006.

Colin Kolles, Managing Director of Jordan Grand Prix, stated: "I have known Christijan since 1999, when he was driving successfully in Formula 3 in Germany, winning six races and starting 10 times from pole. Since then, I have followed his motorsport career with keen interest. He is very competitive, professional and a proven race winner. I am confident he will acclimatise himself to our team very quickly and help us with the car's development throughout the season."

Christijan Albers commented: "I am really happy to be taking the next step in my F1 career with the Midland team. I appreciate all I have learned with Minardi this season, and look on this move as a step forward. It is by far the most challenging option for the future. I know the team a little bit already, as I tested with them in December 2004; and I have known Colin since 1999, when I had a very successful F3 season in Germany. I am impressed by the way the team, along with partners Bridgestone and Toyota, are developing the new car. I am really looking forward to the first test at Jerez on 7 December in the team's cool new colours and will do my very best to help the team move forward on the grid. I should like to thank Mr. Shnaider and Mr. Kolles for their confidence in me as a race driver. My thanks also to my sponsors for their renewed support: the investors represented by Peter-Jan Rubingh; my management and marketing agency *** Industries.com; Essentially Group who deal with final negotiations and legal affairs; and ABN AMRO Bank; all of whom are have done a great job. Last but not least, I'd also like to thank my fantastic group of fans, who support me day and night."

Tats just confirming who will be driving for the 2 teams - nowhere does it mention the no2 slot at Red Bull Racing.

I've heard rumors of DC and Liuzzi in one and Klien and Speed in the other - as Klien is more experienced and could act as team leader in Squadra Torro Rosso
