Update for the mod contest - details of how to submit your mod logs

All the major cutting has now been done, the panels now fit properly and the PSU will fit easilly as well (I wish i'd tried the PSU before moding to see if it would fit)

Need to get to work on the side panel next and tidy up the cuts in the chasis before the stripping/painting can commence.

Also still need to work on the front panel, really can't decide on anodizing or just polishing it up. Need to pull a finger out and get a cost for anodising the panel.

Has anyone else got any updates on how their work is coming along?!?

Mines goign slow as well there's a couple of bits holding me up but once i get those sorted then it should be all go - were almost at the end of september now and the entries have to be in by the end of october so time is running out!

Small update - Due to my CM PSU not fitting my case properly, i have scratched up the sides of the PSU - so i have decided to have a go at painting the PSU and i'm going to put new stickers on it.

The design for the new stickers:

If the painting goes well i may decide to paint the side panels too!

Harib0 - don't do things by half do you ;) :D nice attention to detail.

Well to be honest i wouldn't have needed to do it if the bleeping PSU fitted ok, and having spoke to Ichabod last night it seems i'm not the only one - his real power 550 is a tight squeeze in his wavemaster, and he's scratched all the side of his too!

Will do some before and after shots of the old and new stickers.

UPDATE!

Well today i spent my time stripping the paint from the side and top panels, i was really surprised at the quality of the fininsh of the bare alu underneath and actually considered for one minute to just leave them bare, but the paint was purchased so i will carry on and paint.
paint on the PSU - it would not shift, so i think it's going to be a sanding job YUCK!

Bubbling of the paint on the top panel:

The black paint on the PSU not shifting:

The paint almost off the top panel, and the paint stripper getting to work on the side panel:

The top panel having a nice hot soapy bath:

Tomorrow i hope to prime the panels

Primer went on tonight, it's been a dry day and the temp was just nice, although it was dark so i'll have to check out the job in the morning.

I've used one and a bit 400ml cans of plastikote grey primer (2 side panels, top panel and PSU case, inside and out), Next step is to sand and prime again - will probably be the last coat of primer as i only got 2 cans, then will move onto 2 coats of colour followed by 1 maybe 2 coats of lacquer

PS wilkinson is very cheap for plastikote at £4.49 a 400ml can

Looks like it's only me left in then :(

Second coat of primer went on last night and i'm off over my dads to make use of his garage for the first coat of colour - i'm pretty excited now as the finnish looks to be near for me, and with only two weeks left it's a good job lol

Well here is the front bezel and bay blanks, anodised blue - i haven't seen them in person yet, they should be here tomorrow so i'll post some more pictures then

Haha i just had a thought - as most ocukers have been unable to finnish in time or haven't had the funds, it means i should (hopefully) get a larger share of the OcUK votes that may have been shared out between the ocuk entrants
Time to start rounding up voters me thinks lol

minimum order charge of £30, including polishing the front panel, anodising and postage back

The front panel originally had some scratches which i sanded out some time ago and was left looking like this:

Argh disaster has struck! i've been putting on the colour tonight and for some reason there are certain areas on the side panels that have reacted and look like i've sprayed paint stripper on them!

I'm going to have to start all over again!

Any one got any ideas what has gone wrong - i'm using plastikote super primer in grey and a plastikote metalic colour.

I stripped the panels with paint stripper washed them down with warm soapy water and dried off. I used panel wipes from halfords prior to priming.

I then sprayed one coat of primer front, allowed to dry and sprayed the back, the panels were left to dry for a couple of days, yesterday i wet sanded washed off dried and the panel wiped before spraying the second coat of primer.

Today i wet sanded again washed off dried and panel wiped before spraying the colour.

The PSU case is fine and completed now, but the side panels have reacted.

Is it possible something was left on the alu and has come through the primer and reacted with the paint?

Also the colour didn't go on nearly as easily as the primer did - i was lulled into a false sense of security!

Willpost some pictures when i get home, the last coat of primer was done yesterday evening around 7pm, and i started painting the colour coat about 4pm today - so i think the primer should have dried ok

no force drying was done heres the pictures

It's a total disaster, i've just tried to strip this stuff off and the back of the panel which is primer is just smearing around not blistering like paint should, it's like adding water to a water based paint - the panels are wrecked :(

The top panel and the PSU case are fine but the two side panels :( there must have been something on then, even though all the panels were treated the same and all done at the same time.

I'me really liking the colour and how it looks on the good parts but i think that i shoukd have gone with a different spray as this plastikote stuff seems even though dry it marks with a finger nail it just seems too soft.

supposedly the primer is touch dry in 10-20 minutes and thoroughly dry in 30-40 minutes. the metalic is touch dry in 5 minutes and thoroughly dry in 25-35 minutes

The first coat of primer was done on thursday night, it was sanded and washed on sunday morning. Sunday late afternoon evening the second coat of primer was applied. late this afternoon it was sanded again and washed, dried by hand then the metalic was sprayed on. So i think i've given plenty of time to dry ?

I'll have another look in the morning when there is better light, it's hard working out side in the dark with poor lighting.

I'm actually really upset about it as it was all going really well, and i was so chuffed with the way the primer went on nicely - very very deflated now!

Major update

MAJOR UPDATE

The contest has been extended for two weeks due to the CM forum being down with server problems for two weeks!

Cheers Rick, the contest deadline has been extended two weeks so i should be able to get it sorted out by then.

"Dust covering" thats interesting, your right I do tend to spray so i can actually see the covering - will try next time to go a it slower.

Also on talking to platikote "tech" help they have said that i don't have to use primer on alu and that i can spray direct - is this advisable? I don't think i'll take this route as the top panel has been done and it looks good, and i think the side panels would look different with out the primer.
