2008 Japanese GP - Race 16/18

Surprised LH got a penalty for the start to be honest.

Same, I think it was unfair. It just shows how inconsistent the stewards are, almost every race a quarter of the grid is forced off on the first corner and it's always been dangerous off the line and you don't see the slower performers getting penalties every race. If Hamilton gets a penalised for forcing someone off the track than so should people like Coulthard that also forced a car off through dangerous driving in a much more spectacular fashion (just an example using DC as I think he had a suspension failure that couldn't be helped). All cars should be monitored equally and given penalties fairly, regardless if it's a championship deciding scrap between Hamilton and Massa or a battle between Button and Sutil at the back of the pack.

A drive through penalty also seems really quite harsh as what Hamilton did caused no contact, whereas Massa ruins Hamiltons race and the penalty is the same. Although I don't think Hamilton should have received a penalty at all, if Hamilton gets a drive through for that, Massa should at least have got a stop and go penalty, especially seeing as several racers in Singapore had to stop and go just because of that retarded safety car rule.

It's a shame a lot of post race talk comes to drama made from the stewards decisions or comical pit lane errors. At least today we saw some great on track action from Kubica, he put up a great defence against Raikkonen.

I feel its a grave injustice to F1 viewers world wide that Alonso is not in a Ferrari or Mclaren. Top drive by him today.

I don't understand why they resigned KR when they could have had FA. It just does not make any sense! Ferrari would be unstoppable with FA.

They don't see FA as a character they can work with off the track. All that McLaren business has ruined his reputation sadly, although I wouldn't want to call whose fault that is.

To be honest I'd rather see a Ferrari beating FA in a Renault than the other way around as it's a much greater achievement.

Massa should have got a stop-go penalty. He cut a chicane and in the process rammed another car.

LH had a crap start but like he said at least he didn't hit anyone. Bad starts happen all the time but it's pretty rare penalties are given.

He didn't hit anyone because half the field drove off the track to avoid both him and hieki. They had no intention of making that first corner but instead doing all they could to force Ferrari off the track. Then causing a chain reaction which resulted in the DC going off.

A penalty well deserved.

Yep it does seem like that could have been a bad decision by Ferrari, although for Ferrari it may have seemed like a difficult decision to drop a calm champion who knows the team well, for someone who is known to be a volatile character but who is a double world champion who might not be happy with someone as fast as Massa as his team mate. I think Ferrari probably picked the lower risk option with keeping Raikkonen.

Well the rumour was that Alonso had shook hands with Todt on a Ferrari deal a few years back but he went back on it and signed for Renault and since then Ferrari seemed to say he will never race for them. But with Todt gone then maybe it can still happen. The rumours in Italy are that Kimi was the one who took the option to extend his contract by 1 year and it was not what Ferrari wanted. Also suggested Ferrari will buy him out of his contract and Alonso will be at Ferrari for 2010.

Rewatch it. The *only* car to be significantly impacted by LH's move was KR.

DC's crash had nothing to do with it. Even DC didn't mention LH at all for his reason for going off.

I see your reasoning for the penalty being deserved, but don't you think based on the same logic similar penalties should be dished out each race to people who are usually at the back or the middle of the grid and force each other off the track? Usually causing wings to be damaged and putting some people off the track.

I wouldn't have a problem with the penalty if everyone got the same penalty for the same issue, but unfortunately that isn't the case.

On reflection I think the Lewis penalty was harsh and the Massa penalty deserved under the current climate of F1. But personally I would much rather a return to the days of letting them get on with it and sort it out on the track.

I love JA's comment when LH pits on lap 2.
"Hamiltons coming in... either a puncture ... or a tactical move..."

2 laps in... tactical move James?

Wait what? You'd rather see a Massa/Kimi driven Ferrari beat Alonso in a Renault because "it's a much greater achievement?" I don't understand that statement

I think both penalties were deserved, the punishments however were not consistent.

Maybe LH should have served a drive through and Massa a stop and go.

Any news on the investigation yet?

Reading that is brilliant in hindsight. :D

kubica is spot on with his comments

doubt he is jealous of lewis, who would be? plus kubica has done a much better job this year than lewis has
What have you been smoking?
To be fair, look back at the start of the season. Hamilton made 4 or 5 errors which could have cost him big points, but as luck would have it, it sometimes benefitted him. Monaco is a prime example, where he was no-where, then all of a sudden, through pure luck, his tyres were in perfect shape, so it looked like he'd been dominant, whereas in reality, it was probably the luckiest win of the year, save for Alonso's in Singapore (though Alonso deserved to win, it was only luck that put him in that position).

Kubica on the other hand has just been relentless, making very few errors, and continuing to get the best out of a car which isn't good enough to put him in 3rd in the championship.

Only 3 drivers are in with a shot at the title now... and one is driving a BMW.

Kimi tried to turn in twice, but couldn't as there was a McLaren spearing past him. He had to turn left at one point.

Had they just continued on roughly as it was, then perhaps fair enough, but Kimi had no choice in the matter, and as a result ended up in 8th, and Massa was forced back too as a result.

I sort of get him, after so much domination by Ferrari it was nice to see Renault win championships with Alonso, and I'd like to see that happen again :).

No, I mean I would love to see FA beating a Ferrari in a Renault rather than dominating in a Ferrari. I was up at 5.30 ;) <3
