2009 Ashes Series - England vs. Australia **Spoilers**

Four if Pietersen was playing. It is a bit embarrassing I must admit, that English cricket has been a bit of a foreign legion of players for a long time. Some of whom have a greater link to the country of England than others.

There's a scathing article on the situation here: http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/cr...ion-for-england/2009/08/06/1249350638418.html

Hold on a second, Strauss has been educated and lived in England from the age of 6 with an English mother and Prior moved here aged 11, (there obviously no excusing Trott and Pieterson apart from the fact that Pieterson is half English but grew up in SA). Of course an Australian paper is going to take such a one eyed view.;)

As I said, some have a greater link than others :p I wasn't just thinking of the current team either.

The article seems to be onto something that we aren't producing enough world class players at home though. There is obviously something about South Africa and the upbringing received there which is more conducive to producing tough characters and talented cricketers.

There's a good reason for that though- there is only a finite amount of first-class cricket squad positions available here, and Britain is a true multi-cultural nation, so players from abroad will flock to the UK to play simply because it's the best place in the world to forge your craft. In other words, foreign players are in with as much of a shout at getting a squad position as any "true" British player. The only way around that would be to restrict county cricket to UK naturalised cricketers only, but that's hardly in the best interests of cricket, and above all, the fans. Who wouldn't want to see all those world class foreign cricketers playing in county cricket?

And at the end of the day, Aussies like to whinge and find a reason when they're not dominating! I remember when we won in 2005, the Aussie headlines were "South Africa regain the Ashes" :)

Still no chance for an Aussie win; all we can hope for is a slightly more respectable loss.

Have to say I am pleasantly surprised by the current performance, though. Went to church and came back expecting to find Australia down to the tail end. :D

Well, that article is from the Sydney Morning Herald, which serves an unspoken but widely accepted dual function relating to domestic hygiene. ;)

Skim-reading, it looks more like sour grapes than valid assessment of England's cricket situation. There may be some wheat amongst the chaff, but I can't be bothered looking for it. Australia must look to her own team and selectors for the reasons behind our Ashes loss.

Flintoff has hardly been used today and Harmison hasn't been used at all, what do we make of that? Is it because Strauss has no confidence in them to get the job done?

The bowlers we are using are not exactly setting the world on fire.

Well, these two are certainly making it respectable!
