2012 NASCAR thread

Kenseth's looking good for this year's Cup championship if he keeps up his performance.

Regular season is one thing, the Chase is another. If he gets off to a good start in the run to the Cup, then I agree he'll be tough to beat. But plenty of drivers before have had momentum going into the Chase and fallen woefully short!

Can't say I like that system. Playoffs belong in the NFL :p

Well, Roush Fenway's drivers didn't exactly cover themselves in glory there causing two big wrecks... Stewart picks up his third win of the season and Kenseth retains the title lead with Dale Jr still second in the standings.

No shocker.

Ditto!

Was still an enjoyable night watching. I was really sorry to see Awesome Bill From Dawsonville get knocked out. After he qualified up the order I thought we might see something out of the history books - a fast run at a superspeedway by Bill Elliott :)

Oh, and not wanting to knock someone before all the facts are in, but AJ Allmendinger - I really hope it's not true, and he hasn't done anything dumb.

He's been suspended for recreational drug use before. I've seen responses to the recent suspension calling it unfair and hypocritical (as Nascar doesn't apply the same policy to alcohol). Now, I'm not normally one to be bothered by that but it is Nascar's rulebook and as a private motorsport association, up to them what substances they want to ban.

I can understand banning performance enhancing drugs in things like athletics, and banning drug use any time during a race weekend, but if this is during the off time, I don't see it affecting the racing, just like as you say having a beer mid week.

Oh and I really enjoyed the Nationwide race, Danica really seems to have picked up her game recently, and had an amazing car for this race (one of the few who could nearly keep up with the drafters when on her own  Pity she got taken out by someone who took out several others.

Unfortunately the majority of US states have harsh (in my view) penalties for recreational drug possession, so it probably isn't that surprising that Nascar takes the same attitude.

I missed that. Of course the skeptics would point to the fact that only lesser-funded teams are 10th and below in the standings, putting her last of the established field.

Aside from getting caught up in wrecks, I think Danica's still struggling to drive those tanks without killing the tyres. Look at Hornish Jr - a well established, successful IRL driver but he couldn't even qualify for 6 of his first 8 races in NW.

AJ Allmendinger tested positive for 'a stimulant' of some kind. He's requested that his B sample is tested, and has corralled together the contents of his medicine cabinet for testing to see if one of them is the cause.

Remind me to stay away from youtube comments sections of American motorsport videos. There's always the "ovals are pointless" crowd infesting them that is a waste of time conversing with...

Just sat here herp derping along watching the highlights from the Nationwide race at Daytona thinking to myself "this has been a good race, even without any big wrecks" and then boom, massive pile up. Lol.

Surprisingly Kurt Busch wasn't involved :p

Being new to oval racing I'm not familiar with his 'history', but I think he has been driving really well in the NNS this year.

But dang, Danica :(. And wow, she is short, lol.

Put it this way, Kurt Busch is a fast driver but he has a serious attitude problem and is probably the most disliked personality in the Cup field. He's already been fined\put on probation this year (which was for two seperate incidents at Darlington and Dover). Since his Cup championship back in 2004, Kurt's had a reputation for flying off the handle.

A few incidents with Tony Stewart during the 2007 season were definitely over the top even by Nascar standards (for example, repeatedly ramming into Stewart's car during practice, then blocking access to his pit). His behaviour was deemed bad enough that Nascar fined him, put him on probation for half the year and docked him points.

After repeated incidents last year, Busch effectively got fired from Penske at the end of the season:

So, what happened in the off-season to the Cup? We-e-ell, quite a bunch of things changed. Kurt Busch, Penske Racing and their sponsors mutually agreed to release Busch from his contract, i.e. he got fired. I guess constantly flying off the handle and insulting your own team isn't a great career move after all - who would'a thunk it? He's found a new home with Phoenix Racing to drive the #51 Chevy.

Oh, lol. I did wonder why Kyle was driving the 54 at Daytona with Kurt in another car. Possibly because nobody else out there would want to tandem draft with him? :p

And another massive wreck after the finish that Kurt wasn't involved in.

Yeah, Kurt's even had a run-in with his own brother in the past ;) a somewhat lukewarm relationship I would think, despite the fact that Kurt is driving for Kyle's team in Nationwide.

Ah, come on sr4470. You've got to tell the full story.

Like how he left Roush racing:

ESPN said:
Roush Racing put up with Kurt Busch's reputation for reckless driving on the track. When the defending Nextel Cup champion was accused of doing it in his own car, the team had seen enough.

Busch was suspended Sunday for the remainder of the NASCAR season after his run-in with police, who said he smelled of alcohol and was belligerent during a traffic stop Friday night.

"It's the last straw for Roush Racing," said Geoff Smith, president of Roush Racing. "We're officially retiring as Kurt Busch's apologists effective today."

This coming off the back of a 2005 season where he wound up juuuuuuuuuuust about everybody in stock car racing. And having made many enemies even before that season began (Jimmy Spencer for one!). It's rare enough that a very good driver (and Kurt undoubtedly is one) gets the sack from one team. But to get sacked twice? From two of the sports biggest names, Roush and Penske?

Just. Not. Smart.

I'd be here all night if I listed all of his shenanigans ;)

Speaking of the Busch brothers, Shrub's on pole for the next race at New Hampshire.
