2012 NASCAR thread

NASCAR.com said:
2:14 p.m. ET -- All options are open right now for the Daytona 500, including running it tonight. That's according to NASCAR official Steve O'Donnell on Twitter.

Think they'll finally snap the streak of never having to move the 500 back a day, to be honest....

I can't see it running today. Even if they get the track dry, and turn the lights on, I can't see the rain staying away for long enough to get the full 500 in.

I left the random perfect stream i had for an hour, come back and it won't stop buffering, damn my less than a meg connection!!!!!

Hoping to see the start at least before I hit the sack

Yup its been announced it will start at Noon tomorrow, but more of the same weather is expected it seems.

*edit*

So thats 5pm tomorrow for us right? Should be able to sneak back from work in time then. :p

yup, 5pm gmt, although not sure if that's the start of the race or start of the buildup (which is something silly like 90 minutes).

And as you say, more of the wet weather, looking most likely to be tuesday now

Indeed, race postponed - first time ever for the Daytona 500.

And to pre-empt the 'nurr why don't they just use wet weather tyres nurr' chorus - not really an option. NASCAR has trialled wet tyres on road courses several times over the years, and even ran races on them (Nationwide series at Montreal), but as yet Goodyear cannot make a wet tyre that allows safe, competitive racing in the kind of conditions that Daytona has seen today.

The problem is the banked turns dry off quicker than the less steeply banked straights. When you have dry banked corners you need slicks as wets will overheat and basically melt with the stresses going through the tread blocks. Then you come to the still damp straight sections that while still banked have less of a dry line and no one can really move off the line. The slicks required for the dry banking would just aquaplane and everyone would be spinning off.

Green flag scheduled for 12:13 ET. Hopefully they'll get this race run with no more interruptions, holding it any later would be a logistical nightmare given that the next race is in Phoenix, AZ.

They snuck that update in under my radar! :)

Really hope they don't get pushed back any more....

Not much chance of me watching that if it does start today. That is midnight here, so will be 2am by the end, and I don't think I will in a fit state to go to work after that :(:(:(:mad::mad:

2am? How did you work that out? The race is like 4 hours long.

Just get a copy to watch with dinner for tuesday and keep away from the result which living in the UK is pretty easily done unless somebody dies.

I have to say i was most amazed that in 53 years this is the first time the race hasn't happened on a Sunday, they've had delayed and shortened but never cancelled. I just hope the race does happen at some point today!

Chatting to a mate who lives 2 hours from Daytona and he told me its been dry all day. I'm not sure that means much, but I've got a mate in America do I get cool points?

You'd get more cool points if you went out and bought a ******* Porsche 911 again.

;)

I just don't see Danica catching up anymore, they're just going to chuck her back in for experience. 88 or 42 to win!
