2012 NASCAR thread

No, he said he had vibrations. Vibrations don't mean you slow down they mean you tell your pit crew and they try and work out what it is while you drive and cope with it. If these drivers slowed down every time something might happen racing wouldn't exist.

Got to agree with you. And at the end of the day, it was a pretty freakish accident - 99 times out of 100 he'd have missed the dryer truck and ploughed into the outside retaining wall.

I thought the trucks were out drying a wet track?

Irrelevant now as vids clearly show that something broke.

nah, just blowing crud off the track, it was during a caution.

99 times out of 100 the vibration would go away and he would have caught up to the pack.

And whoever said the trucks need more protection i think you need to compare Montoya's car to the truck again! Truck look like a truck still. Montoya's car didn't look like a car haha!

The trucks don't need protection, the fuel tanks do. Regardless of the injury (or lack of) to either driver, a fire ball of of fuel melting the track is less than desirable.

Just finished watching this, good race and gotta like Biffle for sticking with his team mate.

Montoya hitting the dryer was mental, I agree it wasn't his fault, yes he could've been going a bit slower but that's about it and it still may have happened, it was almost definitely a car failure at a really bad moment. But the fire afterward was just crazy, for quite a while the fire extinguishers were doing nothing, gotta love kerosene \o/

I watched this race live until about 4amGMT before calling it a night. Just caught the last 40 laps now. Really good race and one that will be talked about for some time thanks to Montoya :p

I have to say though, i won't be watching another one live. The sheer amount of adverts was just nauseating and it really annoyed me that they did side by side ads during the caution, but full screen ads during green flag. Really stupid!

Bring on Phoenix though now!

I made the mistake of posting a comment on one of the YT videos about how this wasn't Montoyas fault. I'm now drowning in a sea of racist abuse from a bunch of rednecks who can't spell

That'll teach you!

Essential truths of modern NASCAR 'fandom':

1) Danica sucks, even if she gets taken out by someone else it's her fault
2) Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus are dirty cheats who only won so many championships because they cheat and the Chase and they cheat waaah waaah waaah
3) Montoya sucks
4) Local short track racing, despite being the main feeder for getting drivers into NASCAR sanctioned series, sucks

Jimmie Johnson docked 25 points, Chad Knaus (crew chief) and Ron Malec (car chief) suspended for six races, Knaus fined $100k by NASCAR for the illegal car body pieces that tech inspection uncovered.

Story on NASCAR.com

Now, I'm a big fan of JJ so what I say here will not be all that surprising - I think that penalty is way, way too harsh. I figured on Knaus getting a fine, and maybe a suspension. But docking Jimmie 25 points? He now goes to Phoenix with -23 points, 70 behind Matt Kenseth at the top.

Docking the team 25 owners points would have been fairer, and still sent the required 'Don't **** with us' message that NASCAR wants to get across.

Yeah, why does he get docked points for things that, ultimately, have nothing to do with him. It's not like they even ran that car iirc, it was found/fixed prior to any running?

Although on the other hand, does it really matter, they'll clearly still make the chase even with that deficit...

Had it been the first time the 48 crew had been caught out then i don't expect the penalty would have been that harsh, but it isnt the first time they have been caught overstepping the boundaries and it wont be the last.

It's the same in F1 though, like Redbull with their flexi-wing (although not illegal in the tests).

Is there a truck race later on today?

No truck race as far as I know, just Nationwide and Cup this weekend, NW is 9pm GMT tomorrow, Cup is 7:30 GMT on Sunday iirc (that might just be the build-up/coverage start times)

Indeed. The trucks don't race again until the end of the month at Martinsville.

The feed link on post 80 says he is starting his stream at 15:00EST, which is 20:00GMT i believe. It's a shame there was no trucks last night, anyone know why trucks have a much smaller schedule than nationwide and sprintcup?

The eastern races actually end up at a really nice time over here. I will have done everything i need to do during the day, had dinner, washed up and can just sit down and relax while watching some awesome racing.

Money. There's a lot less of it in the Truck series. The drivers can usually find a Late Model race or something other elsewhere when on an off-weekend.

Nationwide green flag drops at 21:45 or thereabouts our time AFAIK. Giving the invocation now.

***edit***

No idea who this girl is singing the anthem, but she's crap.

The girl singing the national anthem is awful,

I did like how Motors Tv was advertising that the Nascar was coming up at 21:15, when it was already 21:29 :p
