2013 IndyCar Series / Mazda Road to Indy discussion

Watched Race 2 this morning, well done to Pagenaud. Was a fair few incidents during the first part of the race, especially that fairly big pile up.

Great weekend all round for Conway, especially as he just jumped into the car, imagine we'll be seeing a bit more from him this season after this.

Watched Race 2 this morning, well done to Pagenaud. Was a fair few incidents during the first part of the race, especially that fairly big pile up.

Sato was being Sato, de Silvestro apparently had a steering failure. Bourdais causing the big pile up seemed to be brain fade on his part, was penalised for it. I've not been a fan of double file restarts and allowing drivers to pass before the line, it contributes to the problem. That and the caution for Viso's wing end-plate was questionable.

Great weekend all round for Conway, especially as he just jumped into the car, imagine we'll be seeing a bit more from him this season after this.

Conway looked pretty mediocre for most of last year, and he's had his fair share of crashes in Indycar and GP2 which is why he has few wins. Still, I'll give Mike credit when it's due, he drove very well this weekend.

Indycar Series Round 8 of 19: Firestone 550

33l1d06.png

Venue: Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth, TX
Track length: 1.5 miles
Race length: 228 laps (342 miles)
Lap record: 22.542s/236.678 mph (Paul Tracy, Reynard 01i-Honda, 2001)

Overview: Indycar first arrived at the Texas Motor Speedway in 1997, under IRL sanctioning. CART followed in 2001, but the race was cancelled due to high vertical and horizontal G-forces causing the drivers to feel ill after a handful of laps. Post-unification, Texas is often the next oval after Indianapolis on the Indycar schedule. The event often features close finishes, with 18 races being won by a margin of under one second. In 2011, the second of the Firestone Twin 275s scheduled at Texas ran caution-free at an average speed of over 206mph.

Indycar Series Round 9 of 19: Milwaukee IndyFest

Venue: Milwaukee Mile, West Allis, WI
Track length: 1.015 miles
Layout: Quad oval, 9.25 degree corner banking
Race length: 250 laps (253.75 miles)
Lap record: 20.028s/185.5 mph (Patrick Carpentier, Reynard 98i-Mercedes, 1998)

Overview: The Milwaukee Mile has a long and storied history, having first hosted powered vehicles in 1903 - making it the oldest motor speedway in the world. Racing legends such as Jim Clark, Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi all competed here, with Clark being the first to win in US open wheel racing with a rear-engined car in 1963. Indycar (then sanctioned by AAA) first added the track to its 1937 schedule, and subsequent races have been held every year since, with the exception a 4-year hiatus during World War 2 and 2010. Indy Lights will be hosting its 5th round of 2013 at Milwaukee.

Indycar Series Round 11 of 19: Pocono Indycar 400 presented by Sunoco

2z7raq0.jpg

Venue: Pocono Raceway, Long Pond, PA
Track length: 2.5 miles
Layout: Triangle
Banking: Turn 1 - 14 degrees, Turn 2 - 8 degrees, Turn 3 - 6 degrees
Race length: 160 laps (400 miles)
Lap record: 42.51s (Emerson Fittipaldi, Penske PC-18/Chevrolet, 1989)

Overview: Pocono Raceway opened in 1971 and differed from existing oval-type tracks in its three unique turns with varied banking. Indycar under CART sanction ran a 500 mile race at Pocono until 1989, as part of the 'Triple Crown' of ovals offering bonus prize money in recognition of the difficulty of winning the award. Emerson Fittipaldi holds the current race lap record at 211.715mph. Pocono returns to the Indycar calendar in 2013 as a 400 mile event, but retaining Triple Crown status along with Indianapolis and Fontana. The track also hosts Indy Lights, ARCA, Nascar Truck series and Nascar Sprint Cup races.
