2014: 300lb to Spartan Race - My Journey from Fat to Fit.

How do! Just a quick one as I'm off to bed.

I'm still on track to do my race on August 30th but I've been heavily set back (quelle surprise) but actually not entirely down to me!

I didn't do much more CrossFit as I couldn't afford the added cost but I carried on regular Gym and Krav Maga until mid May when I ended up suffering an ongoing condition.

I was having severe joint pain moving around my body, which initially started last November on and off, but became chronic from May until recently. After numerous blood-tests, x-rays and runs to hospital, it turns out I have a fairly unusual but chronic form of Gout. Brilliant.

So after almost two and a bit months of being on a walking stick, having issues in my thumbs, knees, ankles, shoulders - basically everywhere, I had to drop Krav for now and my gym went awry until about two weeks ago when I started to get back on track. I've put 6-7lb on from where I was and my medication hasn't quite taken effect yet (takes 2-3 months apparently) but I'm not beaten yet. I've got 7 weeks until the race - I need to shed more weight and get my cardio/running sorted - my strength is definitely improved but that needs to get better soon.

7 weeks. Gulp. I'm not going to be where I wanted to be, but I'm going to finish the race and try and get to where I wanted to be after that.

Will be going back to Krav in September hopefully.

Still on at the gym, still have DOMS from squats on Saturday :p

Then that caused a gout attack in my knee which only went away today. Going for a 6 mile jog/walk 'off-road' on friday with some friends.

31 days until the Spartan. Still fat. Getting fitter. Mind slowly coming around to diet and the future again. Think I'm going to start stronglifts sometime this week or next.

Spartan is going to nigh on kill me, but I'm going to finish it, even if I'm crawling and bleeding.

How do you feel about your earlier diet choices etc now on reflection when you look at where you are now? Would you do anything differently at day one?

This isn't an attack or a told you so or anything like that - i am interested in how the juicing etc kick started your change?

Interesting question!

I don't regret it and it did me a lot of good. The thing is, when I throw myself into these things, I have to go all-out to stick to them. I'm much better off when there's very little choice involved. Juicing did what I needed it to, so did the plant-based weeks. The plan started to fall apart when I ended up not being able to walk, or sleep because of gout pain. Except I had two months of nobody diagnosing it properly because I have a strange type which moves around the body...

Anyway, I think I'd still recommend it as a way to kick start a healthier lifestyle. Cutting out crap and processed food is fantastic, and whilst I've slipped back somewhat, I still know what I need to do and how to proceed.

I'm going to struggle big time with the spartan as my cardio still sucks because I'm around 19st, however I'm significantly stronger (not in bro terms) than 7 months ago so I'm going to start stronglifts tomorrow morning and focus on a more rounded 'lifting' diet to accompany that.

I'm seriously upset at how this year has turned out in terms of my plan though. Just tonight I was meant to go walk/run the 6 miles of the North Downs with two friends and I've ended up using a walking stick at work today because my ankle flared up overnight. I'm determined, but it's like my body keeps making excuses for me :/

So started stronglifts 5x5 yesterday morning, right at the beginning.

5x5 Squat 20kg

5x5 Bench Press 20kg

5x5 Barbell Row 30kg.

Found it quite enjoyable and will continue according the plan :)

I did it!

Immensely overweight still and weaker than I'd like but after about 3 hours, I crossed the finish line, covered in mud and with a twisted ankle. 7.5km and the hardest thing I've ever had to do physically. I'm destroyed today.

Onwards and upwards!

In for destroying yourself and then planning the next target :)
