2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Only ever used miracle grow compost. I don't believe it's any better or worse than anything else but I'll stick with it. It's multi purpose. Just going to try some seed compost for initial bit

I think Miracle Gro is a Monsanto company and therefore not one I trust....

I have a small vermiculture system (worm farm!) and I tend to try and make my own compost, or at least partially recycle old compost by adding in worm casts. Not everyone is able to set up like this and sacks of cheap multi-purpose compost are very convenient.

I used some J. Arthur Bowers last year and it was really bad. I won't use that again. They had a good Which? award winning product in 2012 (I think) but then they went and changed the recipe. Last seasons compost was bad.

I have planted this years seedlings in Plant Magic, Soil Supreme. I have some left over from last year and it is nice and light.

When I pot up to the next size pots I will be trying Vital Earth Organic. I haven't even opened this up for a look yet. I will try and provide some feedback about it here. I will eventually combine this with worm casts and calicified seaweed.

id be intestested, my trust is up to date :)

I have enough babies to share a few with you, but I can't think of a method of getting them to you without being exposed to cold (Royal Mail). They aren't ready yet anyway, but let me know if you can think of a way.

I think that an Aji Limon, Pimento de Padron and (possibly) Goronong are the most likely. The one I'm not sure of was seed from a supermarket purchased chilli, pictured below:

It looks very much like a Goronong to me but the supermarket label didn't state the type.

I got a new heated propagator today, a nice big one. I have planted my spare seeds and transported everything into the new one. I could probably get another 30-40 seeds in it, it's that big. Those fruits looks nice :)

Yeah they are odd looking life forms. I think they might have been labelled as bonnets, but they looked nothing like them. Tasted pretty similar to bonnets as I recall, but I'm keen to grow them to see whether I get the same fruit shapes.

These are Malaysian Goronongs (not mine), for comparison:

Just got my ones sown today. Not too many, 2 scotch bonnet, 2 Trinidad scorpion butch T, 5 basket of fire(couple to give away) 4 Dorset Nagas and 4....ahem...Apricot Habaneros, just to test and see what they are like. heat is pretty much non existent, but my gf hates hot stuff, so we can see if she likes them.

A chilli definitely doesn't have to be hot. I only grow super hots as I enjoy the challenge and I do make use of them albeit limited. Habanero aren't really hot but I had some ketchup made of it and the flavour was out of this world when put on BBQ sausages.

All of my seeds are now potted, hope they germinate, some are in a heated prop, some are just in covered seed trays, fingers crossed! I've chosen nearly all super hots this year so we'll see :S

I resurrected the heated prop from the greenhouse last night. It was full of water and green algae eugh! Cleaned up and gave it a test run. All seems good to go!

I had a small plant in a "greenhouse" last year, but I don't have a garden this year.

Is indoor growing much different? I'd quite like a plant or two this year :)

How can I avoid the stems stretching at the start? I'm struggling to find a place with enough daylight indoors.

They could be too warm, at this time of year their just isn't enough sun light. Now you could get some lights to create fake light, which you could then grow 24\7, or enough to simulate a summers day.

I've had only one seed germinate so far out of like 50 and that's a Trinidad moruga scorpian, the others still might yet. I still have some seeds left so will try another method with those. If they all fail, where is a good place to get plugs?

Got things shooting up all over the place, one has poked up this morning with the seed stuck on it's head.
