2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Got things shooting up all over the place, one has poked up this morning with the seed stuck on it's head.

One of my Scotch Bonnets has that :D

I planted 4 of each of the following with the intention being to keep the best 2 of each variety for potting on:

Jalapeno
Scotch Bonnet
Habanero
Cayenne
Naga Bhut Jolokia

So far, all 4 Jalapenos and Scotch Bonnets are through, 3 out of 4 of the Cayennes and Habaneros are through and 2 of the Nagas have shown up. The Scotch Bonnet seeds were taken from a pepper I bought from Morrisons and dried myself so I'm delighted they've germinated.

I also planted 4 each of seeds from some dried chillis I bought, not expecting anything to grow. They were New Mexico, Ancho and Cascabel. Surprisingly, 3 of the New Mexico have shown through but none of the others so far. It's more than I was expecting so it's a bonus.

I've taken the seedlings out of the propagator and put them in the windowsill as some of them were shooting up and getting spindly (Jalapenos in particular). I've rigged up a small table lamp with a daylight bulb for 18 hours a day to give them a boost. I'll leave the rest in the propagator for now as they've only been in a couple of weeks so might get some more yet.

I've got myself a grow light for once they're potted on to the next size of pot, once they get a bit bigger and sturdier - although I suspect the 300W lamp may be slightly overkill :o

Most of mine have shot up now, annoyingly the missus put the seeds in to germinate and did them in 2's ("in case some don't germinate") silly woman, so each fibre pot has 2 shoots now, I know I need to separate them ideally.

All superhots this year, surprised they all germinated so easily, well apart from the naga morich which have't done a thing.
I do have concerns regarding he lack of sun at the moment though, worried they might all end up spindly.

Ahhh... my babies! I hope they survived OK and aren't too stunted when they grow. I guess you never know how nature will cope with being posted as a wee seedling until you try :)

RM did do a very good job as they we're only posted yesterday at noon. Thanks for the PP to cover postage.

i tried emailing you last night but works firewall was blocking connections to smtp

yeah they look okay, they landed on my desk mid morning and they went straight onto a warm windowsill. transferred them to a propgator last night and they've taken up residence in the sunniest window of the house.

:)

Planted the Reapers last night, I started them off in the airing cupboard but they would have been fine in the Propagator I think. Now it's the waiting game. I'm going to have some really spindly plants.

This might be a silly question, but I planted my tepin chili plant in the ground and forgot about it! Turns out it's still alive(?) I read that, this particular plant can survive over winter... i wonder if it will Re grow for the simmer!? I have a picture.. It looks more like it's growing into a bush with the thickness of it?

Here you go a better pic in their new home.

They've perked up in the sunshine we've had the last few days and some chilli focus :) the only one that isn't visible is one of the aji but that didn't have any stem yet anyway. I can just see some green starting to poke through :D

They look great and I'm very impressed that so far 4 have survived their 250 mile migration and are looking very healthy, with their new home. There is a fair amount of luck involved in the correct ID of the plants, but hopefully when they grow you can tell the difference between the strains more.

IIRC the Aji's have nice flowers and are quite an abundant fruiting plant. Also known a Lemon Drop.

Chocolate Bhut Jolokia fruit will look like shiny turds :)

Goronong's already pictured, will be freaky if they actually are Goronongs. I haven't grown these before but have a few now.

I hope your cat is forgiven now all is well.

I'm surprised too, I think royal mails speedy service in this case helped along with a well timed burst of sunshine..

Yes I've labelled them up as you did in the packaging for now and we'll see what develops!

The cat is forgiven but the other half still owes me some brownie points, which is good because I want to get some planters and hydro bits soon.. :D

I would like to sound people out about a chilli seed pass the parcel (an idea from another site, which I was involved with and took part in). I can't recall what the timing was, but you need the seeds to have made the whole journey prior to Christmas, as that is when some people start germinating.

I have loads of seeds and would like to give some away like that, and as some are older and less viable, they should be free and people can just gamble and see what happens. The thing I liked about the Chilli PTP is that you all have to grow at least one plant from a mystery bag, which is added to by anyone, especially when you realise you have spilled some seeds while getting them in or out of fiddly little seed bags. I'm growing 2 mystery plants now.

Yep, first year growing them by starting them off in wet kitchen towel. Saves a load of space when you're trying to germinate seeds which never will.

Moving house soon, so a bit behind this year, but will finally have a garden! Chillies and tomatoes a plenty! Will most likely have to take a trip to the garden centre to buy some plants rather than growing from seed.

I just picked up a growlight garden which are great for giving chillies a boost before we get any real sun, most of mine germinated apart from a few stubborn ones. Tomorrow I'm going to buy a greenhouse, hope we get a decent summer this year :)

Anyone got any tips for keeping the little black midges off my seedlings? Think they're a bit young for perlite and I don't want to use pesticide.
