2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Ordered one pack of these from SeaSpring

Stumpy
NuMex Twilight
Fairy Lights
Apache
Spike
Prairie Fire
Sparkler

They're all smaller plants to be grown on the conservatory window sill.

Had to water quite a bit as my Reapers must be sat directly on the heating element and the soil dries out fast, due to sunny weather I have removed the lid now in the day.

nothing really new here to report on, all 5 seedlings seem happy.

picked up some plastic boxes to do some testing with self watering pot setup.

just need to do some research on the best potting mix (soil/perlite/vermiculite) for self watering and/or maybe drip watering.

Got mine potted on into 4" pots this afternoon. Potting medium is 1:1:1 of topsoil:Perlite:general purpose compost. Gave them a little shot of chilli focus to give them a bit of a boost. No sign of any drooping so looking good. Under the grow light now.

Worried I've just killed a load. Took propagator outside to do my potting, it is frosty but it's beaming sunshine and not that cold. Was outside for about 20m and the leaves curled up on a lot of plants. The more mature ones seem ok but worried for the rest. Talking ten plants here.
Edit. Just checked and now they're lying down. Lesson learned, next time I'll keep the soil in pots warmed up before transplanting and do it inside.

Edit 2: 7 have sprung back.

I've had a stupid amount germinate, they all growing nicely under the fluoro's. I expected many wouldn't germinate so it turns out I have like 50 seedlings lol

Yes I wouldn't have though 20 mins of cold would kill them. They wouldn't have frozen. It was probably more of a "shock" reaction.

Stans are quite a bit further ahead than mine.

Nothing from my jalapenos yet, they have been in the compost pots for about 4 weeks now, I have them in a makeshift green house/propagator consisting of a large Tupperware and some cling-film with holes pierced in it, sitting beside a south facing window.

Time to buy new seeds or wait it out another few weeks?

It sounds like they might be struggling with low temps, assuming there is no heat other than the window. They like warmth and I have previously resorted to putting them on top of a broadband modem as a heat source. In short, check temps and if constant warmth is present, probably need need more seeds. If it is cool/cold part of the time, try constant warmth. Here you go, just found this (repost):

Looking good Neil. Mine are similar size, so no stunting or trauma in yours.
I leave mine in very small pots until they're root bound. Good tip for potting on is don't do it too early.

I also don't feed them until they're big enough.

that's reassuring thanks :)

yeah wont be potting on until they're much bigger yet.

Cheers for that, the window is in the kitchen which is probably the warmest room in our house but it does fluctuate temperature wise. I like the broadband router idea, I'd try similar if the router wasn't located in the coldest darkest room of the house. I could always set up a mining rig under it, they seem to make plenty of heat.
