2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Little update;

The ones on the dining room table seem to be doing the best;

I think they would benefit from a pot-up, as they look healthy and will be a bit squashed in the peat pots.

Looking good Neil! I have been picking out the buds on mine up to now, as I want the plants to develop further before fruiting. I have a couple of plants which are now big enough to allow them to flower :p

How many will you have if they all germinate?

I put 5 of each into Tupperware and 5 of each straight into soil.

Not seeing much movement from the remaining Tupperware seeds, might start a fresh batch. Nothing at all from the Bulgarian Carrot.

Harder to tell with the soil batch obviously.

The aji's are loving being in the greenhouse, lots of new growth.

Bit concerned about the goronong, that leaf issue has turned those odd patches brown. The smaller aji that had a single leaf with that problem dropped it. Hoping it's not going to drop all of its leaves and give up. The newer top leaves are okay though. The bhut is storming ahead of it now too.

Speaking of which it should've warmed up a bit pit there now, best put them in the greenhouse.

Hey guys!

Any suggestions what I need to do with this chilli plant? I've probably over watered it but not too sure.

I could be wrong but it looks like a combination of underwatering and too much sun. Try adding one of those dish things under the pot and then when you water you can fill the dish and if it drinks it all then you know it's dry and you can add more. Plants generally like bottom-watering method more than top-watering. It might be worth moving the plant away from the window while it recovers.

Plants can survive amazingly well following leaf drop. Leave them to sort themselves out and they should be fine. It might change the shape/structure of the plant, similarly to your pruning. I have had leaf drop loads of times and it's not really a problem, as long as their is no deadly chilli disease :D

Woo got more loops from my soil batch.

At least 4, two of which are Bulgarian Carrot and a couple more Hungarian Wax. Time to migrate them from the airing cupboard tomorrow :)

Loops 21/04/14 by -neilgates-

Loops ahoy!

Another Hungarian Wax, 2 Ring of Fire and 2 Bulgarian Carrot. So I've hit my target of what I wanted (2 of each).

Reckon I'll have some more to come yet too, there's the 2 other Ring of Fire from the Tupperware batch that rooted and got put into soil. Got another very small loop Hungarian Wax and a few other soil batch starting to root too.

Some good photos in here, seems more of a turnout than 2013 :)
Here are some random photos, I'm really going to start running out of space soon as I'm slowly potting up to 6" so the weather really needs to get better so I can ship some outside.

Photos in tags. The one you see in the 'greenhouse' was just an experiment, it hasn't died but it sure as hell ain't growing either.

Coco coir compost is something I have used in tiny amounts, not really knowing what I was doing. It is fascinating stuff with a lot of potential, and appears to be sustainable (unlike peat based compost). I want to grow some of my chillies in coco coir this year and I discovered this video while looking for the one about pruning. I'm interested in the use of compost tea with the coir...

*vid*

I've ordered some organic coco coir of the bay.

herman, how goes the coir?

Well sadly, as I've missed the start of the seed growing by a good few months, I decided to cheat this year and purchase some plugs. I hate the fact that I'm not growing them from scratch, but being able to have a nice harvest of chillies this year is far more important!

So anyway, this is what I've ordered:

Chilli Plant, Cayenne Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Orange Habanero Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Trinidad Morouga Scorpion Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Red Seven Pot Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Scotch Bonnet Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Fatalii Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Antillias Caribbean Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Paper Lantern Plug 2014

Chilli Plant, Thai Demon Plug 2014

Hopefully that will get me a lovely variation of chillies so that I can make some lovely jams, chutneys and sauces, as well as to add to currys and chillies that I'll be making over the winter :)

I will try to get some pictures up this weekend. Most of mine are doing well, some look a little pale, not sure why, and something is munching holes in the leaves of almost all of the ones in the greenhouse, which is incredibly annoying!

An update on mine so far.

Aji's at the top and Scotch Bonnets at the bottom. Scotch Bonnets were started about 2-3 weeks after the Aji's so I don't expect them to be as far on but they just seem a bit weedy compared.

As I'm being proper ghetto and growing these in cut 2l bottle bottoms some interesting results. The Aji's have put roots right to the bottom and into the Nobbly bottle bottoms already.

I'm going to get a few chilli plants/plugs I think. A friend has all the seedlings I germinated in his green house but I have a south-facing windowsill that is just begging to be filled with plants...
