2014 Chilli Growers Thread

post fingering.

(this conversation sounds so wrong)

i guess i just have to wait for the others to bloom before giving them a little tickle..

Not sure I'll end up with any this year, most my plants got annihilated yesterday, some are actually crispy, I forgot to open the greenhouse flap.

You might have damaged them beyond repair but plants are remarkably resilient. You might want to give them some shade / air / water and see if they recover. I would lay off the feed. Hopefully they will survive and kick out new leaves.

agreed. i wilted a load of seedlings on more than one occasion over the last few weeks. theyve all bounced back, apart from the 2 the slug got at (i found the little bugger too, was hiding under one of the pots).

make up some of the DIY "ikea trofast" based self watering pots? hold about 3l of water.

e:

*take 1 of these as the res - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00252578/
*take 1 of these as the res lid/pot stand - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00091415/
*take 1 of these as your pot - https://www.hydroculture.co.uk/6-litre-square-pot
*take some of this as your wick - http://www.selections.com/gardman-capillary-matting-0-53m-per-meter.html

*punch a 20mm hole in the middle of your 6l pot for your wick.
*punch a couple of drainage holes in the trofast lid (i also used these to zip tie the pot to the lid) and if you like a fill hole in the lid (if you zip tied the pot its easy enough to lift and twist for fill access).
*feed your wick through the pot hole and trofast lid hole into the res (pre-wet it at this point to aid wicking).
*add gravel to the base of the pot (enough to cover the pot holes) to aid ventilation and prevent mould.
*fill pot with your medium making sure the wick runs upward through the medium.
*plant your chilli/pepper/tomato/etc.
*fill res.

work really well, in the space of a month you can see there is plenty of growth:

Mine are fully established plants, in fact these are on their second season. They survived over wintering. Found out they aren't annual and can survive years, just need to keep them above 7c ideally. Mot sure such established plants would do well.
