2014 Verizon Indycar Series Round 6 & 7 of 18: Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans

15yvktl.png

Venue: Streets of Belle Isle, Detroit, MI
Track length: 2.385 miles
Race length: 70 laps (166.95 miles)
Lap record: 1:17.4371 (Mike Conway, Dallara IR12-Honda, 2013)

Overview: The Detroit Grand Prix began as a Formula One race in 1982, through the downtown streets surrounding the Renaissance Centre. Ayrton Senna won the last three F1 races held there between 1986-1988. It became an Indycar event under CART sanctioning from 1989 to 2001, moving to Belle Isle in 1992. After a 6 year gap, Indycar returned to Detroit for 2007-8, halting the event subsequently due to economic problems in the city. In 2012 the Detroit race was revived for a third time, despite historical difficulties with the quality of the tarmac surface and paddock\spectator areas. 2014 continues last year's dual 70-lap race format, and will be supported by the United SportsCar Championship, Pirelli World Challenge and Stadium Super Trucks.

Glad Castroneves won the second too, he did all the hard work and would have been a shame for him to lose it after those late safety cars.

Well it is a tough track that punishes the slightest mistake (as Bourdais discovered).

Poor weekend for Hunter-Reay drops to 3rd in the standings now.

Yup, his weekend never got going once he made the mistake in Saturday qualifying.

2014 Verizon Indycar Series Round 8 of 18: Firestone 600

33l1d06.png

Venue: Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth, TX
Track length: 1.5 miles
Race length: 248 laps (372 miles / 599 km)
Lap record: 22.542s/236.678 mph (Paul Tracy, Reynard 01i-Honda, 2001)

Overview: Indycar first arrived at the Texas Motor Speedway in 1997, under IRL sanctioning. CART followed in 2001, but the race was cancelled due to high vertical and horizontal G-forces causing the drivers to feel ill after a handful of practice laps. The event often features close finishes, with 18 races being won by a margin of under one second. In 2011, the second of the Firestone Twin 275s scheduled at Texas ran caution-free at an average speed of over 206mph. The race will be extended to 600km from 2014 onwards.
