2016 Chilli Growers Thread

Moved my chillies to bigger pots last weekend. I went for 9" hopefully they'll be big enough. :D

A couple (both Golden Cayenne) are budding nicely and I think I can see tiny buds appearing on a couple more (Aji Limon).

have to be careful at the moment with the 10 degC nights, wind and random birds :/

The biggest threat to mine seems to be the idiot meter reader from Eon who shoved one off the table they are stood on while reading the gas and electric meters.

Mine are all coming along very well.

First year in the new house and nowhere for them to go inside the house. So instead theyre spending all their time in the greenhouse. I think they're really benefiting from it.

The more sun the better except when they get sun burn!

The longer hours of sun result in more energy they have for growth and fruit.

The new greenhouse is in a really good position, getting sun all day. The window I had previously used was south facing, but did miss out towards the end of the day.

Sun burn? Do I need to stay applying sun lotion to the leaves? :p

I have sun shade installed in the greenhouse which should help.

Wow I noticed today one of my chilli plants from last year has a little shoot right at the bottom. They were left outside all winter and it has not been watered as I thought it was dead, so the soil was rock hard. Really didnt expect to see that.

Shame it didn't show signs of life earlier as its a bit late now. Still need to get around to buying a few plants. Its making me jelly seeing all these progress shots.

Some more pics of my current crop, all grown from seed this year.
I even have about another 6 plants I'm growing at work too. Heheh !!

Hidden as the pics are a bit big :)

Apache F1 Hybrid, Fatalli, Antillais Caribbean, Jalapeno and Prairie fire.

Chilli update - not as successful as previous years but more varied..

First Chilli of the season with hand to compare (hand is 8").

The casualty - looking like it's loosing it's brave battle to damping down.
Previously I've never had an issue with this and the other plants have overcome this when it appeared for a short period.
I've attempted to dry this out to the point that the pot is light and the plant almost starting to wilt but alas putting a little water in seems to fire up the fungi quickly. Even using the dipping pot into water method.

However the little chilli is putting some out now :D I think this is the F1 little Apache..

I had a sunflower that was hit hard by the conservatory.. with really high temps and no shade the leaves can sun burn quickly on strong UV days. This one got bit too. The leaves will die partially but it doesn't spread or affect leaves not facing the sun.

Something weird I noticed.
Does anyone know if the shape of the chilli depends on the shape/size of the pot?

Bearing in mind these 2 plants shown below were grown from seeds that came from the same plant I grew last year.

Exhibit 1.
Short squat pot = short squat chillies.

Exhibit 2.
Long thin pot = long thin chillies.

:confused::confused:

The chilli size/number depend on the plant's ability to support them (and flowers). Assuming that the pot soil is changed/both fed the same.

So a small pot = low water/nutritional support.
Large pot = higher water/nutrient capacity.

In terms of size, I guess the Pringles tin is about 70% the soil capacity of the other pot, however it's the shape of the chillies that's perplexing me, not the size or number :)

Just struck me as weird that they certainly do seem to be mimicking the pot shape !!

Am trying the following this year:

Scotch Bonnet (this didn't seem to be growing very well for some reason and thought I had lost it to be fair But I have transferred from a large pot to a smaller one and it hopefully seems to be doing better)

Hot Lemon

Hungarian Black

The Hungarian Black has started to flower :)

Jalapeno

Went out this morning to find a slug munching the top of one of my plants.

The little sod has all but chomped through the main stem about an inch from the growing tip.

The little bugger. I hadn't given slugs a thought, but with it being the first year I've grown them exclusively in the greenhouse, I probably should.

Ate the first of mine on Saturday. Some fried Pimiento de Padron.

First time I've ever eaten these surprisingly. I'd heard about them being mild with the occasional hot one. I managed to get one of the hot ones with my very first one. I stuffed the whole thing in my gob and thought "These are hotter than I expected". However, the rest were mild.

I've only had the four from that plant and it now seems to be semi dormant - probably due to the lack of sun and pitiful temperatures - I hope summer starts soon or it's going to be a poor year for chillies.

My other plants have a few chillies on them but have stopped producing more, the same as the Pimiento de Padron. I've got several Bhut Jolokias (of which one is starting to ripen). I have the grand total of three small Scotch Bonnets at an early stage, five orange Habanero and seven red Habanero. Some of the Thai Demons are ripening but they're tiny - about 1-2cm.

All-in-all, a bit of a poor show so far :(

Crushed egg shells on top of the soil are supposed to be good for stopping slugs. Might be worth a try if you want to avoid using chemicals.

I get loads of slugs in my garden but they didn't bother with my chili plants for some reason. I had more trouble with aphids and caterpillars.

Our greenhouse yesterday:

Mangetout at the back (climbing), tom's in the main bed (with some basil mixed in), then chillies and peppers in pots.

Also have one super chilli and one pepper in the conservatory which are just starting to flower having put on quite a growth spurt in the past couple of weeks.

RIP sick chilli plant :( The poor thin has finally succumbed (outside) to damping off.

The others are going strength to strength.. and the first chill is darkening day by day..

Slugs are a nightmare this year get dosing with slug pellets! They've decimated a whole bunch of stuff I planted out eariier its so bad I've had to sow some more incase the existing ones don't make it.
