2018 Chilli Growing thread

Scorching may lose a leaf or two, same with cooler weather, just don’t keep doing it and your fine.
Mine have looked crispy and recovered last year.

IKEA now do cultivating LED's.

I think I'm just going to grow indoors. Being in Scotland it's too cold and the weather too unreliable to have them outside.

Cheers for mentioning that - I want to get an indoor setup put together later in the summer for next year's seeds.

It's £10 a bulb but they have all the right wavelengths and with it being IKEA you know it won't be a dud. Not cheap but not too expensive either. I have 3 spare lamps in the attic from a house move so they can now be put to some use.

I'm going to grow a selection of chillis (already got 2 on the go). Basil, oregano and coriander. And a few types of salad. Basically the stuff we use regularly.

Need to look into hydroponic vs compost setups. Apparently hydroponics is much better.

Yikes, I guess this chilli is forcing my hand to top it. I have never done it before and it seems so wrong to take some scissors to a chilli plant... So do I just cut the stalks so that its around the same size as the other plant?

EDIT: Never mind, I went ahead and snipped all 4 growing tips off :(. Hope it encourages it to bush out a bit and stops it growing taller.

i genuinely don't see the point of the really hot ones. what do you guys do with them?

like i've seen stuff where they say. stick 1 drop of this stuff into a stew, etc. like what is the point? why not stick a whole chilli in of something less hot?

I have been thinking of this, I have an old fish tank which has an inbuilt water pump.
You need to supply nutrients and oxygen to the roots, a pump (filter) with no media, and an small airstone should do the trick I believe

I was tempted to try transferring a plant at the end of the season, just wash the roots really well and move to the fishtank setup

With IKEA doing those lamps its worth me taking the time to modify the light housing to accept a more normal bulb (typically for cheap all in 1 fishtank setups they use an odd bulb)

I've grown Reapers this year just to see what they are like really and how many I can get. I use Habaneros quite a lot but they are probably about as hot as I can comfortably eat so I have more of those plants.

Most of the jalapeno have started fruiting and the aji limon and ring of fire are looking to do the same already. Think it was the lovely weather we've had since the bank holiday wkend.

Looking good! I think i'd be potting them up soon as they look a bit big for those pots.

Yeah the weather has been great recently. My cayenne has about 7 chillies growing now and the rest are all flowering.Hope it continues for a while so the rest can start fruiting.

First time growing.

Got a couple of 'chilli shakes(?)' from someone local selling them, very very small at the moment.

And another one (name has slipped my mind) from a local nursery that is coming along but still no fruiting.

Only just spotted this thread.

What sort of size / stage should I be getting them to before looking at moving them outside and into bigger pots?

All of the ones here seem to be a lot further along than mine.

Thanks!

I don't think the size matters too much, but the bigger the better to help them survive slug/snail attacks. A small chilli plant can be decimated overnight by a few slugs. I don't like the idea of using slug pellets on food plants, so it can be hard keeping them away. I tried copper wire and egg shells with some success, but still ended up having to pick a few off every day .

The main thing is to harden them off by placing them in a sheltered location outside for a few hours every day for a week or two, so they can get used to changing temperatures, full sun and breeze. Also might be a good idea to use a garden cane if they're a bit leggy.

If yours are small then it might just be that they need potting up. Mine shot up after I potted up into 3L pots from the size they were in the first picture i posted in this thread.

All going well here, everything has been potted up to final 10" pots, Aji Lemon, Big Jim, Joes long are all trying to grow flowers (keep nipping them off atm, want another couple weeks of growth) and the purple princess are bushing out nicely with no flowers (much smaller plants).

Wanting the bulk of these to get big as some are destined for BonChi arrangements, and end of may flowering has worked well for me in the past. mostly greenhouse based now. :) (greenhouse went up at the weekend!! Happy days!)

I'll be re-potting mine hopefully this weekend in to larger pots, need to get an order placed for new pots and another bag of dirt from the rainforest first

And perlite and vermiculite I hope...

One retains moisture, other helps drainage. I do 8 parts compost 1 part perlite 1 part vermiculite (roughly, measured using a plastic cup so about right) and it works really really well as a growing medium for chillis and tomatoes.

Why not visit your local (ideally independent) nursery/garden center to get pots and compost.. Supports a local business, you get it now, very little price difference and they usually have chillis for sale as well (can never have enough!)

:)

Can't go on my own atm as only just got out of hospital and not allowed to do any lifting until my next op towards end of summer, so have to order everything to home. Having prime account just makes it easier for me to get what i need delivered straight to my door next day without having to ask others for a lift to garden center and help carrying everything. Otherwise I normally support local businesses whenever possible. The only +ve out of this is 2months off work and been told to take it easy means im finally catching up on my steam back catalogue :D
