2020/21 Sack Race

Jim White reporting that Benitez is on the brink of joining Everton. I'm not sure if things have changed but Moshiri used to have a hot line to Jim White every time he wanted to get news out.

If this was 10 years a go then I'd have no problem with it.

But he went to Newcastle and did absolutely nothing. buggered off to China (despite his constant talk about loving being close to his family etc) and did nothing.

If he completely transformed Newcastle then maybe you'd consider him, but just no.

He did very well at Newcastle given what he had to work with. The fans there love him to bits and would have him back in a heartbeat over their current manager.

Transforming Newcastle, given the state they're in with their ownership, isn't really possible but if you ask Newcastle fans what they think about him and whether they'd have him back I'm sure the general opinion would be hugely positive. The reason why he left was because he saw no way of progressing under the current ownership and I always got the feeling that he went to China expecting to return to Newcastle once the takeover went through.

Benitez won't just go through the motions, happy to pick up his salary like a Koeman or a Bruce. He's not somebody that will just plod along, happy to stand still - he'll want to continually progress the club, which is why he often falls out with boards. If Moshiri is going to continue to invest and back him then I think he'll do well for you. You need somebody that's going to buy into a medium term project and that also has experience working at the level you want to reach.

Everton claim to be the communities club but then dismiss Rafa? Rafa knows Liverpool and their community more then most managers, hes the perfect fit.

I've just seen a couple of clips of Keys and Grey discussing it :D :D :D They've had it in for Benitez ever since he introduced that dirty foreign zonal marking system into the PL but my god, they're two bitter old dinosaurs. Everton could reappoint Fat Sam, give the job to Warnock, Pulis or Steve Bruce and those clowns would think it's a great appointment but they're losing their **** over Benitez :D

He's gone the way of Mourinho, and many other great managers of the past, in my opinion. Stuck with a system that hasn't been productive for years yet continues in the hope that system will one day bring him success once again.

He's also made enough bad decisions and had enough fall outs with owners and supporters to last a life time and I'm past the point of feeling sorry for him. You don't join a club run by Mike Ashley expecting continued squad progression unless you're thick as pig ****.

I don’t think it was the squad that pushed Rafa out, he wanted investment in the training ground which among other premier league clubs is an embarrassment apparently. Ashley refused to invest, Rafa told him he wouldn’t sign a new contract unless it came with investment, Ashley, as per bloody usual, refused and Rafa left.

What system? He's never been a manager that has a particular way of playing, he's a pragmatist who will change how he plays depending on his team and the opposition. Re Newcastle, he took the job because it was the best available to him (and he wanted to come back to England) at the time and I'm sure he'd have known about the takeover talks in the background. He's been close to Staveley (who was fronting the bid) since his time at Liverpool. The takeover dragged on, he saw no sign of being able to take the club any further so he left.

His record since leaving us hasn't been that bad. Obviously the Inter and Real jobs were the two big jobs, which didn't go well but Real are a bat**** crazy club and despite winning the treble the season before, Inter were about to enter a 10 year transition period - they had an old squad and they were completely broke, just as they are now. I've no idea about China but he couldn't have done any more at his brief spell with Chelsea, getting them into the CL and winning the two cups and likewise Newcastle. I guess the Napoli job you could say he neither excelled or done particularly poorly but even then, the Napoli owner was desperate for him to stay.

What I would say is he has a bit of a habbit of taking jobs at terrible times. If he wasn't an ex Liverpool manager that called Everton a small club, he'd be perfect for them imo. He needs to start well to gain some goodwill because if he doesn't then they'll turn on him in seconds.

edit: and when did he fall out with supporters?

When Rafa joins a club he's fully invested in that clubs success. He looks to make improvements from top to bottom and will do exactly that at Everton. If the Everton fans have any sense they'll look beyond his Liverpool history and accept and embrace him because he will look to improve the club regardless of his own Liverpool history. Calling them a 'small club' when Liverpool Manager was exactly what fans expected of him. As a Liverpool fan I wish him the best at the club, as long as they're behind Liverpool at the end of the season!

when did he fall out with supporters?
I'm not sure it was a bilateral 'falling out' but he was unpopular with a vocal segment of Chelsea fans when he was appointed - banners, chants telling him he's not wanted and to **** off etc. There's not many managers that face such vitriol from day 1 unless they're associated with a local rival or have some form of bad history with the club (previous statements, cheating/bad tackles, perceived as money-grabbing etc). Fans usually turn after a period of poor performances or dull play etc rather than stick the boot in from the start.

Another twist in the Spurs debacle. BBC reporting they've pulled out of Fonseca's signing, at such a late stage that they were already discussing signings! They now want Gattuso. Perhaps they're trying to break the record for how many managers they can talk to.

well every season it used to be this is who spurs were "gonna" sign, now they've moved on to managers

Gattuso will certainly be very entertaining if it happens. I predict if it does he'll be out the door by Christmas. he only lasted 2 weeks at Fiorentina!

This is all part of Levy's master plan. Rather than wait until the end of the season to sack Mourinho and hire a replacement a week later, he sacks Mourinho in April and waits until a week before the new seasons kicks off, saving himself 4 months worth of wages.
