2020/21 Sack Race

Interesting that Nuno turned down Everton to take the Palace job

I'd consider Wolves and Palace as being similar sizes.

Wolves spent 80 mill last summer. Palace 20 plus most of their players are out of contract unless that has changed. Seems to me there is more than meets the eye with his departure.

It's not that nobody want him, it's that he's worth far more to Palace than any side that he wants to move to.

At Palace he could easily be the difference between staying up and going down so they're not going to let him go for anything other than crazy money. To a top 6 side he'd be nothing more than a squad player. Who us paying crazy money for a squad player? City at best and they don't want him.

Depends what you mean by crazy money but there's a few in the traditional 'top 6' (ESL clubs) who have paid reasonably big sums for squad players. Keita, Pepe, Kovavic, Sanchez, Mata etc all £40m+ players. You could argue Pepe wasn't intended as a squad player, but then he was bought instead of Zaha so fills the same role as Zaha.

That said, I'm kind of in agreement that it's difficult to get a deal that stacks up for all parties. Palace previously quoted £80m for him, realistically you could pay less but still an expensive buy.

I'm not sure any of those were purchased as squad players. They were all intended to be first team players or at least had the potential to go on and be that and all but Pepe were a fair amount less than the £60-80m being talked about for Zaha. £60m odd for a player who is already at his peak and showed nothing to suggest that he'd be more than another option in your squad isn't an easy sell.

Jim White reporting that Benitez is on the brink of joining Everton. I'm not sure if things have changed but Moshiri used to have a hot line to Jim White every time he wanted to get news out.

I'll be gutted if he joins them unless it's to sabotage them and take them down, in which case go Rafa.

The worst thing about it is he'll do well. He has the right mix of being able to build a side for the long term while also having the stature to attract and work with more established players. The only thing going against him will be the Everton fans turning on him quicker than they would somebody else if things aren't going well and they're not slow on turning on people at the best of times.
