£20k Escort..

If I had suggested a Fiat cinquicento I would agree. But skylines supra etc all classics and massively better in every way.
"Better" doesn't matter. I'm not quite sure you are getting this :p

I think you mean rose tinted spectacles and throbs of uk childhood memories
All those things are emotionally driven, so I'll stick to my original statement, thanks.

You aren't sure, I am absolutely positive. ;)

That is a nice example, but £20k probably a bit optimistic for any kind of speedy sale, but maybe he isn't in a hurry?

You just cannot put an accurate value on classics like that as they come up so rarely in that condition. 80k isn't exactly high mileage either if well maintained.

Whats the statistic again? Something like every escort rs has been stolen 2.8 times?

My S1 was stolen twice whilst I owned it! (second time never to be seen again!) and the S2 was again stolen twice, first time recovered minus it's Recaro seats and alloys , I replaced them with XR3i seats as they were dirt cheap compared to the Recaro, it was taken within a month but this time crashed and trashed.

I would wager both examples in this thread have an "interesting" past history!

I disagree with that I'm afraid, it was everything the XR3i wasn't i.e. Quick, well handling and a very successful racer in it's class.

First front wheel drive car with a limited slip diff not to mention it practically started the chip tuning industry by itself!

Ruined and killed off ultimately by being so easy to steal and practically uninsurable by it's end but still IMO it was a very good car for it's day.

I had two, an S1 and S2 both of which got stolen! :(

I very much liked them and actually preferred the S2 to drive but the S1 looked better and got far more (maybe too much!) attention.

That said, I wouldn't want one today even with deep pockets, the game has moved on big time and the last one I drove was a great way to ruin old memories!! (I've found this with a lot of cars I loved when younger and subsequently driven years later!)

In it's day it was a blast, today I can think of many more equally classic cars I'd like for £20k over an S1 Turbo.

I'm sure that £20k example will find a willing buyer, probably not at asking but not far off I'm sure. As said, it won't be bought by somebody thinking what else £20k would bag him, it'll be bought by an enthusiastic collector.

My first wife had one when I met her in 1995.
It was on a H plate.

She spent a fortune on it, with one thing and another.

Just did nothing for me.

If I really wanted one and I had the money, yes.

Go and tell this bloke he should buy a Skyline instead - http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=52&i=23965

That's the type of person that'll pay top money for a car like that.

Possibly it is and good luck to him. Still think it's relative madness though. The cars are hardly universally acclaimed nor do they have much im the way of global demand.

Escort cos worth I can see potential.

Awful front wheel drive shopping car. The mark of the end of the Ford Escort as a decent car and the RS name as a credible one. Hairdresser's RS.

Hardly universally acclaimed? Really?

The RS 500 Sierra Cosworth a car so successful in touring car races it got itself banned!

The rally heritage of the Mk 2 Escort RS's?

Just two examples of massively acclaimed cars from a range that received praise from all corners.

Were he to put that collection up for sale tomorrow it would sell almost no matter what the asking price, to a global market and for good reason it's a collection of many unique examples of the brand (Princess Diana's black S1 for example) a brand which has huge following from a massive competition heritage gained from results rather than marketing and oversupply.

I Think you're confusing yourself here. Yes the escort rst was surpassed by the Sierra rs500 and escort cos worth. Both acclaimed cars. The rs turbo was seen as bad handling etc from day 1, hardly a racing or rally car. Just inbetween the earlier successful ford escorts and the later and vastly superior ones.
