***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

29" vertical is not enough, currently on 24" 1920x1200 so 29" UW is too much of a drop, in physical size height and in resolution.

If you're coming from that particular monitor then yes, it probably isn't ideal, worth remembering though that what you lose in height from 16.10 i.e. 1", you gain so much more from the 21.9/extra wideness, which gives a far more immersive/cinematic experience and what vertical res. you lose going from 1200 to 1080, you gain even more horizontally i.e. 1920 to 2560

For myself, I've used multiple displays and 29" 2560x1080 is plenty good enough (I would still take it over any 16.9 27" 1440P screen too) especially for those wanting to experience 21.9 without forking out £600+. It really isn't as bad as what people make it out to be.

34" 1440 would be great but until they are sensibly priced or offer better specs for the current prices, they aren't attractive options in my eyes + the good thing about the 29" 21.9 LG screens is the contrast ratio, it has the highest I've seen for an IPS screen of around 1300:1, still terrible but better than the average 800/1000:1 of most IPS screens, also IPS glow isn't as problematic on the 29" screens as the larger 34+" 21.9 monitors either.

I even ditched my dual monitor setup just to have 1 29" screen for clean desk etc. purposes. If I really wanted, I could have 3 monitors setup (all sitting in the loft as I never got round to selling them) for ultimate productivity/multi-tasking/screen real estate but for my usage, I have no need to, this is the extent of my "multi-tasking"

Thanks a lot for the help. I have ordered the 29 inch monitor and should have it by Tuesday I hope.

I will let you know how I get on with it. :)

No problem :)

Cool, look forward to hearing what you think, if you don't mind the vertical height and 1080 res., then you should love it.

Glad to hear you like it on the whole :) And yeah it does take a bit of getting use to at first but after a week or so, I imagine that you will find it very hard to go back to 16.9 again.

Regarding calibration etc. unfortunately these 29" models don't get reviewed by any worthwhile sites so you will mostly have to try other peoples settings or/and calibrate by eye to get settings you like, I'm not 100% sure now but settings wise and OSD, it might be similar enough to the other 29" monitors so you can try my settings which are:

- brightness - 10%, personally I wouldn't go any higher than 20% at most (might seem very dull at first but give it a bit of time and it should look great once your eyes adjust not to mention your eyes will thank you in the long run! :p)
- contrast - 66
- gamma 1 preset
- colour temp - custom with RGB left at their default values
- high preset for the response time setting, this introduces some inverse ghosting but overall I find it makes a noticeable enough difference to motion clarity

I don't bother with the icc profile for the same reason you listed i.e. too dark and I also have some issues with icc profiles introducing gradient banding.

You can then try to manually fine tune the settings further via:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

The white saturation test is great for adjusting your contrast to the correct level.

And just use some calibration images like this:

EDIT:

Cinema/movie preset is quite accurate overall but it was a bit too dark for my liking.

Regarding back light bleed, personally I wouldn't put up with any at all, IPS glow on the other hand is part of IPS but it can be more severe on some panels I find, this is one reason why I use 10% brightness as for me, it pretty much eliminates IPS glow. Supposedly this has improved on both accounts with LG's newer models so that's why I would have gone for the newer/cheaper model I linked earlier on but as per usual, it is entirely up to you.

No problem and thanks :)

If it is bleed (no matter where you view the monitor/corner from, it will always show) then like I said, to me that is a fault, mine has no bleed, just the left side of the monitor is a bit more problematic for IPS glow when viewed from the right side on a black/dark screen.

You could always take a video of the monitor and then take a snapshot of the video to show what the monitor is like without the image being over exposed etc.

I wouldn't hold out for any price drops, a lot of monitors are either the same price or even dearer than what they were 3+ years ago :o The only way prices will drop is:

- when/if retailers drop the extra gouging they add on top to cover all the CCR returns, in order for this to happen, it means monitor manufacturers will need to put more resources/money into QC
- the pound value increases substantially, which is unlikely
- most of the monitor market moves forward with new tech such as FALD or QLED/OLED panels

Just a quick update for you Nexus18 if your interested.:p

I exchanged my monitor for another one as the backlight bleed was a bit excessive. It was in all corners. The new one is better by far with only a bit in the top right corner and it doesn't distract me while the other corners are clear of it.

I have now adjusted to your recommended brightness settings. I use 20 in the day and 10 at night which is perfect for my eyes.

I bought a monitor arm for it so I now have movement without restriction.

I am very happy with this monitor. Ultrawide has the wow factor. I am also very surprised by the overall quality of this display. I have only just took the plastic off after 7 days and it's beautiful. The black level is very good even compared the my Samsung va monitor and so are the colors. I am going to keep this for a while unless a 29 inch 144Hz comes out that doesn't have the drawbacks the current ones do such as low brightness and low ppi etc.....

I sold my Benq 2730Z a few days ago after confirming that I wasn't going to regret it.

Thank you very much Nexus18. You have been a great help.:)

:D

Enjoy

It is a very nice monitor and a great price. Yup, the contrast ratio & black levels are one of the reasons why I chose and still have my LG 29" over other monitors, according to the few reviews there are, they're the highest rated for those 2 areas I've seen for an IPS panel.

It is a shame that LG etc. don't push more 29-31" 2560x1080 21.9 screens with improvements such as 100+HZ, not only would it give people more choice especially for those on a budget or/and not willing to spend £500+ on amonitor but it would help out the 21.9 industry to, especially when you look at the steam survey to see the way things are going:

Tempted to "upgrade" from my 27" Acer Predator XB270HU to this

It the Asus really worth £1100 ?

Imo most certainly not, not when you can get a 55" OLED HDR 4k TV for about £1400 that will obliterate any current LCD monitor, at least where IQ is concerned (only disadvantage of 55" OLED TV is size [if that's an issue], input lag and no sync tech)

Better of getting the cheaper acer, it uses the exact same panel unless you prefer asus, the design or whatever.

Using a vega 56 with my 3440x1440, came from 2560x1080 in the last few days there, vega 56 is taking quite the beating now to the point where I have to drop settings to high/medium instead of fully maxed to achieve 60+ FPS

Dunno if it's been mentioned, but https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ultrawide-video/lngfncacljheahfpahadgipefkbagpdl

Chrome extension that works for like netflix and youtube etc.
Thanks, think I may have included that in the first post or might have been another one.

Depends a lot on the game tbh, some games there's very little difference between high and ultra.

On the whole 1440P does help a lot for IQ in terms of clarity, some good videos out there:
