24 hours of Le Mans 2014

Incidentally, how do the rules on number of cars work exactly? It was mentioned a few times during the weekend that perhaps Toyota should have come with three cars instead of two and I tend to agree with this. With Nissan joining next year though, we'll have four LMP1 hybrid teams and, if they all brought three cars, that'd be twelve cars! Is there some kind of limit on the number of cars in the class?

They are French, what do you expect. That said, it's not 'that' bad, if you ignore the horrific ad breaks.

Very difficult to ignore the ad-breaks when they made up around 40% of the 24 hour race!

The moving between channels so they could show 15 minutes of rubbish, and 24 minutes of Le Mans highlights was strange also... Leave the bloody thing on Eurosport 1, and show your nonsense highlights shows, and football build-ups on ES2.

Glad I watched it, was gutted when #7 went out, surprised that #8 kept running also, seemed to have a few issues after that crash!
Loved the early rain shower, lasted such a short time but caused so much carnage!

I can't speak about overnight (I had a sensible pill), but that's ********. There were quite a few adverts, but there was a good 20 minutes between most, and they weren't as long as those on most channels (enough to make a cuppa, but no more). Obviously it felt like more when you're watching for hours on end.

What ground my gears was the repetitiveness of the adverts used - always the same ones. If I ever considered Rolex watches before, they can rest assured I'd pay more not to have one now.

Just got home. Another terrific year, the weather was the best in the 7 or so times I've been.

Really wanted the 20 car to win LMP1, and the Aston the win GTE Pro, but ah well what can you do!? Audi are just too reliable...

Lets hope that the Porsche team sort out what ever went wrong by next year!!

Just got home. Wasn't gripped by it much this year until the final 4 hours when it all went mad and totally made up for it. I think Porsche and Toyota learned some pretty harsh lessons about both Le Mans and Audi tactics, while Audi probably realise they will have to step it up a bit if they want to keep winning. Should set them all up well for next year!

To be fair, some of the very late rule changes with regards to fuel allowances on the hybrid cars left Audi at a bit of a disadvantage this year and they weren't happy about it.

Hopefully next year this will be sorted out so they can all compete on as much of a level playing field as possible and Porsche will use the experience of this year to mount a serious challenge. Should be an awesome three-way fight, I'm almost tempted to go again :)

I wish the Ferrari rumours are right, but I doubt it. Would be nice to see 5 or so lmp1 teams. Would be awesome.
Didn't watch anything after about 6pm sat, was out then back to parents for fathers day.

Yeah I think a lot of manufacturers, whether or not they're currently competing in other formulae, are looking at endurance racing with increasing interest.

Anyone who went, would you mind saying roughly how much the whole weekend cost? Really want to go next year but money will be tight.

About £300 each for two of us in one car: petrol, food, beer, Dover-Calais ferry, peage tolls, camping and general entry.

A bit far to say it's ***** if you weren't watching! Although I wish I'd had one of your sensible pills. :D (only once a year though, acceptable!)
Near the start it was tolerable. Can't remember when the shift happened, but it got absolutely ridiculous.
The last hour was beyond a joke, 20 minutes of the last half hour was almost unbelievable. Made the show practically unwatchable... Loved the bit "And this is what we've been waiting for for the last 10 minutes! Do not go anywhere!" (something along those lines) *cuts to commercial break*
You only have to look at the absolute hatred on Twitter from the last 2 hours to see how annoyed people were getting.

I wish there were 20 minutes between adverts... Hateful channel, worst handling of any race coverage I have seen since ITV cut to a break and missed the end of a grand prix (San Marino?).

I get the feeling they ramped it up due to the increased interest as Porsche were there.

It's never been this bad before.

Still easier to keep track of what's going on that when you're actually there lol. The atmosphere is incredible but keeping track of what's happening can be a pain at times, especially since they stopped doing the Kangaroo TV things.

Agree with the posts above. I was watching on Eurosport HD and the adverts seemed to be more frequent than previously. At least they were motoring related though.

I wasn't watching overnight. I saw most of the racing in the daylight hours. ;)

As for ITV, yes it was Imola in 2005 or 2006 (both years ended with a race between Alonso and Schumacher and I can't remember which was which). They didn't quite miss the end of the race - they returned for the final lap.

Rolleyes not required, they missed the end of the race and replayed the final 3ish laps...

Out of interest, did you watch the last 2 hours?
I'm not really sure how anyone in their right mind could be defending Eurosport here.

Wow, you really are quite paranoid. The rolleyes were at ITV for doing it, not aimed at you.

I can't check as I'm at work, but I'm sure they showed the final lap live, though I'm happy to be proved wrong. :)

Yes, but windowed rather than full-screen, so maybe they did seem less frequent for me. I'm not defending Eurosport in any way, shape or form, just stating that adverts weren't near the 40% mark, and were usually spread apart enough for me to get a cuppa during a break and finish it before the next... obviously I didn't make a cuppa at every ad break, and I didn't time exactly how long each took to drink and average it out. (just for the sake of clarity, there's one to humour you)

Edit: Sorry, those last few sarky sentences are a bit harsh. :( I'm not that much of an arse. Apologies.

There's a bit of moaning on the RLMS forum about the advertising on Fox Sports who showed the coverage for the Americans. Described exactly the same, so I wonder if they just used the same feed from the ACO.
