24 pin MB Connector Burnt!

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

Yes, go sandybridge or ivybridge and you will see good performance improvements. I think also besides the CPU needing 30% of the power the boards have newer PCIex which help with the power distribution over the older specification.

But why my PSU burned at mobo connector? Second time in about a year, i use a [email protected] and a GTX 580 SLI with 1000w psu

Most of the 580's exceed the slot design power..you have not been using the axillary sli power connector so have burnt out the 24pin connector, very simple !

I am surprised you did not investigate the problem before burning out the second one !

Don't waste your money on big PSU's get a modern board and processor and it will all run on a quality 650watt psu.

Really thanks

But now i've just bought a new mobo and psu, also changed my processor

I have now an intel i7 3770k, a 1200w psu and a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H

I think this mobo does not have this connector, what can i do now?

Really thanks again

I also found at another forum that it was just happening with X58 boards, because i saw some tops mobos for my new processor 3770K and i didn't find the one tor that my lost Rampage III had, am i right?

Anyway, i can't find this PowerBoost to sell in Brazil, if my new set up needs it can you tell me where i can buy outside evga site or even sell one for me? I'm desesperates, can't turn on my new set up untill fix this issue

Thanks

Or just buy a £15 EVGA power booster thing.

Yes , I see it does not have the connector. I understand you might be limited on Motherboard choice where you live, that's a great CPU but the board looks midrange ?
I have been running Asrock boards recently and they are very good see this one has the 4-pin molex...

I would try to get a better motherboard first before adding "fixes" your GTX580's are still good cards so it's worth it ;)

What's with the 1200w psu :D it will not be better as they split 12v rails and i think a single 12v rail is often better ;)

I believe only the MSI lightning and one other 580 are within the PCIex slot design power which means without Auxiliary SLI connector all the power is from the 24pin which means it will overload.
Bad design from everybody here as I suspect the GPU's don't always take the required power from the 6/8 pin connectors as they could...regardless small pCI connector blocks should not be handling heavy currents !

Yes it is a mid range board and qhe don't have a lot of options here, so i will have to stay with it, any problems? And believe, this board sells a lot gere and is very expensive, i saw some good reviews about this mobo, not as good as my old Rampage 3 Extreme but it was what my money could buy now, just spent almost 2.000 dollars just this time eith processor, mobo and psu

I've contacted EVGA and they will send me the EVGA Power Boost for free for me, does it will supply my issue?

My english is not so good soni did not understand what you said about my PSU, can you explain?

Really thanks again

Can you not get one from the US ?.....to be honest I would not use one as it is what we call a bodge :D (quick unreliable fix) its putting power back through another PCIex slot !!! which I imagine all the main 12v rails for the slots are linked with a small printed circuit track

Another good saying ;) Do the job properly first time ! and you will not have to do it again..... Go buy a better motherboard ;)

Not sure why this post is missing ?

PSU is the most important part of a PC

We have 2 types
1. The psu makes many single 12v outputs each with 1 cables/connectors
2. The PSU makes 1 big 12v output and all 12v yellow cables connect to it

The advantage of type 2 is, if connected components do not require so much power more is left for everything else.
Also If a GFX card suddenly needs more power than the limit of a "single 12v" it should be available

Your system will need about 500 Watts which is 42Amps on 12v so because we need reserve power you choose 60Amps, 60amps x 12volts = 720W single rail
If multi 12v you will need 3x12v outputs (2 for GFX , 1for CPU) that will be about 1000w psu

Both types will work ok, but unless you have 4 GFX cards and need extra connectors I would save the money for other components.

I hope you understand some of that :D

Heh, same setup as me until last week.
My EVGA power boost will be in the MM in the next couple of days :D

You swapped a pair of GTX470s for a GTX670?

I was going to go for a pair of 670s minimum next time. I suppose you are running a higher res and need the VRAM though.
(I'd have been tempted to keep a 470 for PhysX though).

Yep :)
470s maxed everything at this res but had vram issues with BF3, it would be smooth, then stutter & get popup so had to reduce settings. It was a sideways move, the 670 is much smoother in BF3 completely maxed (apart from the only AA I used is FXAA because I can't see the difference). I will get another 670 at some point but I shouldn't need the EVGA power booster anymore because the 670s draw a lot less power :)

Not really tempted to keep a 470 for physx, it's too big as a physx card, if I had a separate card for physx it'd need to be something small & silent that I don't need to add to my water cooling setup.

Just wanna thank all the guys who helped me find the issue

As i can't change my new mobo i've conacted EVGA Brasil and they will sent me the power boost for free, it will arrive Saturday or Monday

Let's hope with the power boost i won't loose another psu and mobo

All the best for you guys

I hosed an X58 board overvolting a pair of watercooled 470s (using a Coolermaster 850M). Ended up replacing both of them. Expensive day.
