24" screen beasts!!

If your gaming then a TN panel has to be a serious consideration as other types are often not upto serious gaming...

If your doing any serious image editing type use then a TN is deffaintly not going to cut it... TN is ok for movies if your happy to sit within a fairly tight range of angles.

The problems with TN are massively exaggerated often based on experience of early models...

Can you explain your reasoning on that TN is needed for serious gaming. I mean i spose at the total pro level you could argue that one. And yeah i agree with you i recon my views are most proably based on earlyer models. But well ive never seen anything to show me otherwize i gues.

I have a TN panel and a IPS panel connected to my PC and the main discernable difference is that the image on the TN panel becomes darker or brighter depending on the vertical viewing angle. For example the OcUK forums background becomes a darker shade of blue. When I move down and look up the image on the IPS panel doesn't change whereas the same image on the TN panel has darkened and the lower I go the darker it becomes. When I move up and look down on the monitors the image is again the same on the IPS panel whereas on the TN panel it has become brighter and when I move higher up it reaches it's brightness peak and then starts to become darker again.

When I move left and sit in line with the left bezel of each monitor the image is the same on the IPS panel and it is also virtually the same for the TN panel unless of course I also move my head up or down causing it to brighten or darken as mentioned above.

So for sure there is an issue with vertical viewing angles, and while it's possible to see these issues by moving around, I have to move around a substantial amount for the colour shifting/brightness changes to be very noticable. I can slouch in my chair or move left or right and the picture on the TN panel is pretty much the same. A slight difference in the brightness level occurs but it's hardly worth mentioning. The IPS panel is superior because I see that the picture doesn't change at all but the TN panel comes in a very close second and is perfectly usable. I have little doubt that the majority of consumers who simply make use of the monitor wouldn't even notice the slight differences likely because they don't know such an issue exists (oblivious to it) or when they do know they simply don't care about it.

As stated in my post certain TN monitors display very bad colour shifting. I forget the models now as its been years. I beleive some of the samsungs were particularly bad for this, where people who owned them had sent them back. There was also the problem with the pannel lottery producing terrible blacks in comparison but i dont think this was also affecting viewing angles as far as im aware. Possibly the OCUK one as well, really has been too long. And i agree others not so much. But im pointing out its there and it is. Anyone who plans on using their monitor for other media usesses would be ill adviced to go for a TN monitor.

Secondly ISP is not of same quality colour wize as PVA incase you were thinking about comparing the colour. ISP and PVA can do true 8bit, which Tn doesn't. But PVA can also do higher then 8bit and has better black depths etc etc. But thast not the point you were making im just throwing it in for clarity.

Some people might actually be inclined to read your post and think that you know what you are talking about yet you haven't actually said much at all and in fact the substance in your post appears to be aimed at berating Jaybee which actually strengthens his point about fanboys and obsessed monitor people.

Mm well not really tbh. Fail to see where your going with this. i made the point that i hope he wernt claiming fanboy status over the fact so many people in this thread were pointing out the superiority of the benq monitor. if you were then that is just silly. You dont claim fanboy when someone says one graphics card is significantly better then the other when it actually is...

:EDIT:

However ill admit its quite possible technology came on this i looked at it all and maybe TN panels came a long way. But i know for sure when i was doing my research and really i did a lot. i wernt impressed with them. Specialy with sunlight and things like that. But i thik thats more the sheen that happened to be on quite a few of the screens i saw.

If budget is no issue, how about hanging on for the forthcoming 120Hz monitors? Samsung have a 22" coming in April, and supposedly a 24" in June...

mmm curious, how would the increased frequency effect the picture? Im guesing far less imput lag. Maybe a lot better for extended use due to the effects of the scanning across the screen. Or possibly worse?

I do actually agree the Benq or even a much more expensive monitor (since costing more often being because it's better) is suited for the OP seeing as the best available is what is being asked about regardless of cost.

I have a P-MVA panel monitor which I use with my Xbox 360 and P-MVA is the same panel technology used in the Benq so of course I know what you are talking about and for sure P-MVA has good viewing angles and deep colours (although as you no doubt know the image on a P-MVA panel does tend to whiten when viewing from the side or above especially noticable when compared to an IPS panel) and it is definately a gaming grade panel with no discernable ghosting or other issues like that.

Also from my own experience with various TN panels I would actually be more inclined to suggest the latest LG Full HD TN panel is worse when it comes to vertical viewing angles compared to the previous generation TN panels. Especially at the extreme viewing angles I see colour shifting/brightness changes when looking down on the latest TN panels occurs more so compared to older TN panels so in that respect the latest TN panels could be considered worse than the previous generation.

So yeah for the best available I would definately recommend going for a premium grade panel but for those who read this topic and don't require the best or aren't looking to pay a price premium, a TN panel can be thought of as providing excellent viewing albeit more limited compared to the better than TN panels.

Greatly reduced ghosting and better for movies due to the increased refresh rate.

Thanks for your help guys!! it is true been reading of new monitors coming out soon and is there any news on which ones look the best specswise and at 24"?

I look at the dell and BenQ and think that this is the year they will bring out the best monitors ever so that they can keep up with apple and there LED monitors!! According to a lot of news sites, This year LED will be more readly available! i know i know the prices will be ridiculous!

Also i havn't heard anyones views on the samsung t240, TN panels are the best for games but is this a good monitor? what are the main problems?

Also with the Dell, been hearing about backlight bleed and with the BenQ it is more a desktop monitor than a gaming monitor is this true??

I game with the benq and there are no problems with it.

You get what you pay for, albeit, though, price seems to follow an exponential function.

A higher end panel will produce better viewing angles and better blacks, you also have a lower risk of getting backlight bleeds since you'll generally get a better build quality. Cheaper panels seems to be more likely to have backlight issues, than not.

If don't move much in front of the screen and don't mind risking a couple of bright edges, then anything more than a mid-range TN is probably not worth 2-3x the price.

ISP and PVA can do true 8bit, which Tn doesn't. But PVA can also do higher then 8bit and has better black depths etc etc. But thast not the point you were making im just throwing it in for clarity.

On the other hand, it is getting hard to find good non-TNs that are standard gamut, so it's getting hard to play the "color accuracy" card for normal use :(

really!! thought the 6ms response time and the fact it wasn't TN would make it harder for games? Also how old is this panel? wont they bring out a new and improved version of this monitor?

Image brightness/colour uniformity problem between bottom, center and top even when looked straight on:

5ms response time compensation lacking TN monitors have actual average response time around 13-15ms while for IPS and VA monitors value is always close to real making them have less ghosting:

(RTC equipped 2ms TNs are around 4ms)

Can confirm this. I had one for about a week before returning it. The photos on digitalversys are pretty accurate. You could tilt the monitor down to get rid of the dark top, but then the bottom will go pale. Mine also had a bright corner.

Stay away from this one ;)

i am looking at the dell 2408wfp more and more as the customer service is pretty reliable!! also the monitor is brand new and with the A01 revision, the input lag is much better than the previous model.

right i know the BenQ is one of the best of the best but it is 2+ years old and supposedly age is catching up according to some sites! some say that the dell is now better with the latest A01 revision than the BenQ!

I now do have a budget but the Dell would be in it! looking at the TN panels, which are the best TN panels on the market that can rival the dell and the BenQ?? reason i ask, i would like to have 2 24" monitors!!

Hi,

Having been looking at the Benq FP241w for a dual screen setup I just was wondering what people thought of the WZ version, is it worth the extra?

I was unaware of this. Ive only seen other peoples monitors and of corse my own, i dont know how much they calibrated them and i dont think ive seen any of the newer PVA's in action. But its not something ive noticed on what ive seen, then again i wasn't really looking for it either.
